The Dutch tenor, Jeroen de Vaal, studied first Frtench at the Utrecht University (1992-1994). He studied at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (Utrecht School of Arts) with director Monique Wagemakers and conductor Jan Slothouwer and finished the 1st and 2nd stages of Classical singing (1995-2002). He took master-classes of Jard van Nes and Eric Tapy, and was invited to join Nouveau Studio of the Opéra de Lyon where Jeroen worked with conductors like Philip Pickett, Christophe Coin, Rinaldo Alessandrini, with tenor Marco Beasley and directors like Antonio Latella and Peter Stein.
Jeroen de Vaal made his debut at the De Vlaamse Opera in Strauss’ Salome, followed by Tamino in W.A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöete, Léhar’s Die Lustige Witwe, Prova d’Orchestra by Batistelli, and Verdi's Fallstaff. He returned to the Opéra de Lyon to sing in Kurt Weill’s Les Sept Pêchés Capitaux, and to cover the part of Lindbergh in Weill’s Lindbergh’s Flight. This highly acclaimed production was revived during the Festival of Edinburgh. Later he returned to the Opera de Lille to sing Don Curzio in W.A. Mozart’s Le Nozze di Figaro in a well acclaimed production directed by Adrien Noble and conducted by William Christie.
Jeroen de Vaal works ax tenor soloists since 200. He was engaged at Opera de Lyon (2002-2007); Opéra National du Rhin (August-October 2008); Vlaamse Opera (2004-2009); De Nederlandse Opera (DNO) (2005-2009); Toonkunstkoor Amsterdam (2008-2010); Wiener Kammeroper (September 2009-November 2010). He has invigorated leading roles with Vlaamse Opera and Opéra National de Lyon and appears regularly with Dutch National Opera.
At De Nederlandse Opera, Jeroen de Vaal made his debut in Strauss’ Capriccio, conducted by Hartmut Haenchen, followed by a.o. Eurimaco in Monteverdi’s Il Ritorno d’ Ulysse. He returned to DNO for the world premiere of Rob Zuidam’s Adam in Ballingschap, a coproduction with Holland Festival. His debut at La Monnaie in Brussels received raving reviews for his interpretation of Haenschen in Benoit Mernier’s Fruehlingserwachen. Other roles that Jeroen has sung are :Camille in Die Lustige Witwe with Opera Zuid, Bastien in W.A. Mozart’s Bastien und Bastienne, Gherardo in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, as The Defendant in Trial by Jury by Sullivan, and as Pluto in Offenbach’s Orphée aux enfers, Wilhelm in Thomas’ Mignon. With mezzosoprano Tania Kross and tenor Marcel Beekman Jeroen de Vaal sang the part of Daifilo in PC Hooft’s Granida, a newly discovered piece of Dutch baroque music.
This fall (2009) Jeroen de Vaal sings in Offenbach's Ba-ta-clan and in l'Ile de Tulipatan, a new production at the Wiener Kammeroper.
Jeroen de Vaal can frequently be heard in concert and in oratoria, a.o. as the Evangelist in Georg Philipp Telemann’s Luke Passion, in J.S. Bach’s Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) and Johannes-Passion (BWV 245). |
