The English soprano, Katie Trethewey, studied music at Birmingham University, before going on to achieve a post-graduate Distinction in singing at Birmingham Conservatoire. She now studies with Philip Doghan.
Katie Trethewey regularly works with many of the UK’s leading groups, frequently as a soloist. With Ex Cathedra (Director: Jeffrey Skidmore) she recently performed J.S. Bach’S Mass in B minor (BWV 232) and the role of Filia in Carissimi’s Jephte, both at Birmingham Town Hall. With the Dunedin Consort (John Butt) she has sung J.S. Bach’s St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) at Edinburgh Cathedral and Perth Concert Hall, and she can also be heard on their recent critically acclaimed recording of J.S. Bach’s Mass in B minor (BWV 232). She also sings regularly with the Gabrieli Consort (Director: Paul McCreesh) and has performed many times as a soloist with the group, including on the a cappella disc ‘A Spotless Rose’. Katie enjoys performing as part of a consort group of singers with these and other groups, including Le Concert d'Astrée (Director: Emmanuelle Haïm), BBC Singers (Director: Sofi Jeannin), Dunedin Consort (Director: John Butt), Ex Cathedra (Director: Jeffrey Skidmore), Tenebrae (Director: Nigel Short), Gabrieli Consort, The Cardinall’s Musick (Director: Andrew Carwood), and Ensemble Plus Ultra (Director: Michael Noone).
Katie Trethewey has performed as a soloist at St John’s, Smith Square, singing J.S. Bach’a St John Passion (BWV 245) with the English Baroque Choir; at the Brighton Early Music Festival singing Second Woman in George Frideric Handel’s Solomon; and at Snape Maltings singing Antonio Vivaldi’s Gloria. Other performances include G.F. Handel’s Dixit Dominus, the title role in G.F. Handel’s Semele at Malvern Theatres, the role of Achsah in G.F. Handel’s Joshua at St James’ Piccadilly, the role of Merab in G.F. Handel’s Saul, Haydn’s Nelson Mass and The Creation, W.A. Mozart’s Requiem and Mass in C minor and Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater.
Operatic roles have included Diana in Cavalli La Calisto, Donna Anna in W.A. Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Pamina in W.A. Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte, , Diana in Cavalli’s La Calisto, Gretel in Engelbert Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel and Miss Wordsworth in Benjamin Britten’s Albert Herring. She has also given several recitals of repertoire ranging from W.A. Mozart’s Exultate, jubilate and J.S. Bach Cantata BWV 51 Jauchzet Gott, to Francis Poulenc’s Fiançailles Pour Rire, Berlioz Les Nuits d’Été and Gustav Mahler’s Rückert Lieder.
Katie Trethewey’s future engagements include Orff’s Carmina Burana with Ex Cathedra and Birmingham Royal Ballet; J.S. Bach’a St John Passion (BWV 245) at Symphony Hall with Ex Cathedra as part of the Birmingham International Concert Season; concerts in New York, Boston and several venues across Spain with Ensemble Plus Ultra; and a week at Dartington International Summer School. |
