The Canadian pianist, Marc Pierre Toth, abandoned a Chemical Engineering Scholarship to undertake more serious musical studies. He obtained his Bachelor of Musical Performance degree in Music Performance, General from the University of Toronto (1991-1995); his Associate and Licentiate Diplomas in Performance Piano from the Royal Conservatory of Music Toronto, which he earned under Dr. Boris Lysenko (1995-1996); his Master of Music degree in Performance Piano magna cum laude from University of Toronto as a student of Marietta Orlov (1997-1998); and his Konzertenexam, Künstlerische Ausbildung Klavier, Künstlerische Ausbildung Hammerfleugel degree in Piano and Fortepiano: 3 Performance Diplomas from the Hochschule für Musik, Theater und Medien Hannover (1998-2009; fortepiano and historical performance with Gerritt Zitterbart; Soloist-Class with Einar Steen-Nøkleberg). A recipient of the prestigious International German Government Scholarship from the DAAD and multiple Grants from the Arts Council of Ontario and the Canada Council for the Arts, he has also participated in Master-classes in Banff, Kneisel Hall, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, Hamamatsu, etc. with musicians such as Dmitri Bashkirov, Leon Fleisher, Richard Goode, György Sebők, Hans Leygraf, Karl-Heinz Kämmerling, P. Devoyon, H. Nakamura, V. Krpan, A. Vardi, I. Rohmann, Aurèle Nicolet, Lee Kum Sing, John Browning, M. Bilson, G. Zhou, Pnina Salzman, etc… and the Wilhelm Kempff Foundation Beethoven Masterclasses in Positano with John O’Conor.
As 3rd Laureate at the 52nd Busoni International Piano Competition in 2000, Marc Pierre Toth was engaged for concerts in Lisinski Hall in Zagreb, Amici della Musica di Verona, Amici della Musica di Vicenza, Academia Musicale di Pescara, Festival di Maria Callas in Sirmione sul Garda, Virtuoses de Musica in Brazil, Fondacion Santillana in Bogota etc… Prizes have also been achieved in a dozen other competitions such as the 33rd V. Bellini International Competition, the Compositores d’Espana in Madrid, the International Prokofiev Piano Competition 2003, the Rome Chopin Competition, il Concorso Francesco Durante, Grand Prize of the Future Virtuosos Competition in Japan, the Valsesia-Musica International Competition, the Vietri Sul Mar International Competition, the Glenn Gould International in Italy, and Chopin Society Competition in Germany etc, resulted in many international invitations and performances.
Marc Pierre Toth is active as Classical Pianist and Pedagogue since July 1995. He has appeared as soloist with diverse orchestras in Canada and Europe including Orchestra London, the Paderborn Philharmonic, the Orchestra of the state Opera in Hannover, Orchestra Sinfonica di Roma e Lazio, Orchestra del Teatro Bellini, The Haydn Orchestra of Bolzano, ORCAM in Spain, Orchester des Stadttheaters Bremerhaven in Germany, the Philharmonia Symphony Orchestra of Zagreb, Filharmonia Ungarica and has recently been invited as soloist in Germany, Italy and Russia. He has performed in more than 30 countries in recitals as a soloist and chamber musician throughout Canada and in the USA, Belgium, Poland, Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Germany, Italy, Croatia and Austria, as well as and South America, Japan, and has recently been invited in Russia, Thailand, Japan and China.
After the successes of the ‘Goldberg-das Ballett’ project, ‘Flüchtige Visionen’ to the music of S. Prokofiev, and “BEGEGNUNG: Claudel-Rodin-Chopin” in Bremerhaven, as well as the Bach ‘Preludes&Fugues’ Project in Linz 2006 , all with the Ballet Company of Viennese Choreographer Jörg Mannes, Marc Pierre Toth was featured in the ‘4Beethoven4’ project with the Hannover Staatsoper Orchestra in 2007-08, and the ‘à Propos Bach‘ Project in 2008 & 2009 which resulted in an invitation for the Bachfest in Weimar 2009. Gaining increasing popularity with audiences for his entertaining and informative Concert-Lecture Series ‘What is so great about Classical Music?’, he brings audiences closer to Great Classical Music in at least 5 languages to date.
He has also served as guest professor and lecturer for master-classes at Universities in Canada, China, South America and Europe. He was an Instructor on the Faculty at the the Hochschule für Musik Theater und Medien Hannover for 10 years (2007-September 2016). Currently he is on Faculty at the Konservatorium Dr.Hochs Frankfurt am Main, Germany (since February 2012; a position formerly held by Clara Schumann); Professor/Instructor on the Faculty the Accademia del Ridotto in Stradella, Italy (since 2016); and on the Faculty at the ZMS- Zentrum für Musik und Sprache Hannover (since February 2019), in Hannover, Germany. He also has served as Visiting-Professor at Laval University, replacing the Department Head in 2010. and as Faculty Guest Professor at International Talent Music Festival Main/Rhein-China.
Marc Pierre Toth has been a Jury member of the 3rd International Jazz Piano Competition in Ostra, Italy, the Coppa Pianisti d’Osimo International and the International ENKOR competition. He has also served as guest professor and lecturer at the University of Bogota in Colombia during a concert tour of South America as well as given master-classes at Universities in Toronto, London, Quebec, Bogota Colombia, Italy and Sicily and will be giving upcoming master-classes in Italy, Germany, Canada, Thailand, Turkey and Asia. In 2016 he will make his debut at the Val Tidone Summer Masterclasses.
Marc Pierre Toth has recently restarted the Complete L.v. Beethoven Sonata Cycle in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Canada in 2017, and will be starting and finishing the Cycle in the UK in 2020. Canada. He has recorded the Sonatas Op. 2 on the Fortepiano for the Klassik Label. A Classical Variations CD of W.A. Mozart, J. Haydn and L.v. Beethoven has also been recorded, and the Complete Sonatas are in the plan. He is currently the Artistic Director of the “Music for a Better World” Benefit Concert Series in Frankfurt which supports organizations such as Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and Diakonie Disaster Help, amongst numerous others.
When not practicing, teaching, working or performing, Marc Pierre Toth also trains in Shaolin QiGong and Shaolin Kung Fu, and is also a certified Yoga Instructor having obtained his Yoga Teacher Training Diploma in India, and has been a Yoga Instructor at the HMT Hannover for 14 years.
