The Danish soprano, Else Torp, first specialised in Baroque and even earlier music, but is now also recognised as a leading exponent of many kinds of new music. She has been featured with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra, Gulbenkian Orchestra, Concerto Copenhagen, Lautten Compagney Berlin and Kronos Quartet. She also enjoys singing an extensive repertoire of German and Danish Lieder, and presenting exotic works such as William Walton’s Façade, Judith Weir’s one-voice opera King Harald’s Saga, and Stockhausen’s American Indian Songs.
Else Torp is a core member of Paul Hillier’s Theatre of Voices, with whom she has performed around the world: at the BBC Proms, the London Barbican Centre, Berliner Festspiele, Royal Opera in Copenhagen, Perth International Arts Festival, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, Stanford Lively Arts, Edinburgh International Festival, and the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.
Else Torp has sung on more than 30 recordings. Her solo singing on Ars Nova Copenhagen (Director: Paul Hillier)’s recently completed CD series of Heinrich Schütz’ ’narrative works’ earned special praise. She is also soloist on Theatre of Voices’ Grammy award-winning CD of David Lang’s The Little Match Girl Passion (Harmonia Mundi, USA). Lang is currently writing a piece for her and the Smith Quartet, to be premiered in 2012. Together with London Sinfonietta and Theatre of Voices she has initiated and sung a portrait concert of Danish composer Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen - to be recorded for the Danish label Dacapo. Also on Dacapo, Else has recorded a recital of songs by the early Romantic Danish composer C.E.F. Weyse and her newest solo CD with music by the Danish composer Ib Nørholm was released in February 2012. Having performed Arvo Pärt’s Miserere, Stabat Mater and Passio on many occasions - including his official televised Estonian 70th birthday concert in 2005 - Else can be heard on the recording of Stabat Mater was released in Spring 2012 on Harmonia Mundi. |
