Camilla Tilling (Soprano)

Born: May 18, 1971 - Linkoping, Sweden

The Swedish soprano, Camilla Tilling, studied at the University of Gothenburg and graduated in 1998 from London’s Royal College of Music.

Almost immediately her international opera career was launched at New York’s City Opera when she enjoyed enormous success as Corinna in a new production of Rossini’s Il viaggio a Reims and by the end of the 2001-2002 season, Camilla Tilling had made débuts at Covent Garden (Sophie with Simone Young), the Aix-en-Provence Festival (Susanna with Marc Minkowski), Glyndebourne Festival (Peter Grimes with Marc Wigglesworth), La Monnaie (Sophie with Antonio Pappano), the Met (Nanetta with James Levine) and at Sweden’s famous Drottningholm Festival (Pamina with Arnold Oestman).

Since then, Camilla Tilling’s opera career has gone from strength to strength. Highlights include Pamina (Philippe Jordan), Dorinda in George Frideric Handel’s Orlando (Sir Charles Mackerras), Oscar (Antonio Pappano), Arminda in La Finta Giardiniera (Sir John Eliot Gardiner) and Gretel in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel und Gretel (Robin Ticciati) at Covent Garden; Rosenkavalier, Il Barbiere di Siviglia and Pelleas et Melisande for Gothenburg Opera; Iole in G.F. Handel’s Hercules (William Christie) and Rosina (Daniele Gatti) at the Aix-en-Provence Festival; Zerlina at the Met (Sir Andrew Davis); Gretel for Geneva Opera (the late Armin Jordan); Ilia at La Scala (Daniel Harding), also recorded for DVD; Sophie for Chicago Lyric Opera (Sir Andrew Davis); Susanna for the San Francisco Opera (Roy Goodman); Sophie at the Bayerische Staatsoper, Munich (Asher Fisch); Ilia (Thomas Hengelbrock), Oscar (Semyon Bychkov) and Susanna (Sylvain Cambrelang) for the Opera National de Paris; Governess in Turn of the Screw for the Glyndebourne Festival (Ed Gardner) and l’Ange in St Francois d’Assise for De Nederlandse Opera (Ingo Metzmacher).

Camilla Tilling is equally at home on the concert platform and in recital and has appeared at the Salzburg and Vienna Festivals, as well as the BBC Proms, London’s Wigmore Hall, New York’s Carnegie Hall and with many of the world’s leading conductors and orchestras. Highlights of past seasons’ concerts have included Haydn’s Creation with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra/Esa-Pekka Salonen, Haydn’s Seasons with the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra/John Eliot Gardiner, J.S. Bach's Matthew Passion (BWV 244) with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra/Daniel Harding, Grieg’s Peer Gynt with l'Orchestre National de France/Kurt Masur, Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah with the Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam/Philippe Herreweghe, W.A. Mozart’s C-minor Mass with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra/Ingo Metzmacher, Chicago Symphony Orchestra/Esa-Pekka Salonen and Orchestre de Paris/Paavo Järvi, Johannes BrahmsRequiem with Ivor Bolton in Salzburg, G.F. Handel’s Messiah with the Berliner Philharmoniker/William Christie.

Camilla Tilling features on several recordings: Cherubini Mass in D minor with Riccardo Muti (EMI); Gustav Mahler Symphony No. 4 with the Philharmonia Orchestra/Zander (Telarc); Belinda in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas with Emmanuelle Haïm and Grieg’s Peer Gynt with Paavo Järvi (both on Virgin Classics), and W.A. Mozart’s C-minor Mass/L.v. Beethoven’s Ah! Perfido with Paul McCreesh (DG Archiv). Camilla Tilling’s first solo recording - "Rote Rosen", a selection of Lieder by Richard Strauss with Paul Rivinius (BIS) - was released earlier this year (2009) to unanimous critical acclaim.

This season (2009-2010) Camilla Tilling will return to Covent Garden and Munich’s Bayerische Staatsoper for productions of Le Nozze di Figaro as well as to Japan, where she recently enjoyed a collaboration with Seiji Ozawa in Hansel und Gretel, this time as Pamina at Tokyo’s New National Theatre. A very full concert season, Camilla Tilling will sing in Paris with Kurt Masur (Grieg's Peer Gynt) and with Daniele Gatti (G. Mahler's Symphony No. 2); in Stockholm with Sakari Oramo (L.v. Beethoven, Ah!Perfido); in Munich with Thomas Hengelbrock (F. Mendelssohn's Elijah); in Berlin with Marek Janowski and in Cologne with Semyon Bychkov (J. Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem); in Salzburg, Birmingham and Berlin with Sir Simon Rattle and Peter Sellars (J.S. Bach’s Matthew Passion (BWV 244)) and on tour with Emmanuelle Haïm (G.F. Handel's Messiah).
