The French pianist, Cédric Tiberghien, started playing the piano at the age of five. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de la Musique in Paris with Frédéric Aguessy and Gérard Fremy and was awarded the Premier Prix in 1992, aged just 16. After a further period of study he won several major awards at international competitions: Bremen (2nd prize 1993 - no 1st prize awarded), Dublin (2nd prize 1994), Tel Aviv (Rubinstein Competition 6th prize 1995), Geneva (3rd prize 1996 - no 1st prize awarded), Milan (U. Micheli, semi finalist 1997). In December 1998 he was awarded 1er Grand Prix at the Long-Thibaud Competition in Paris, along with 5 special prizes including the Public Prize and the Orchestra Prize.
This spurred on Cédric Tiberghien's international career, leading to over 150 engagements worldwide, including 7 visits to Japan and showcase appearances throughout Europe.. He has appeared as in solo recitals, with orchestra and in chamber music, both in France (Salle Pleyel, Théâtre du Chatelet, Theatre des Champs Elysées, Corum at Montpelier, Salle Ravel in Lyon…) and internationally (Vienna Musikverein, Amstrerdam Concertgebouw, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, Wigmore Hall in London, USA, Russia, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Canada, Poland, Switzerland, China, Mexico, Columbia…). He has also taken part in many international festivals, such as Edinburgh, City of London, Klavier Festival Ruhr, Yokohama Festival, La Roque d’Anthéron, Toulouse Piano aux Jacobins, Piano en Valois among others.
With more than 50 concertos in his repertoire Cédric Tiberghien has made frequent appearances with a large number of prestigious international orchestras including the Budapest Festival Orchestra, Staatsorchester Stuttgart, Philharmoniker Hamburg, BBC Philharmonic Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Israel Chamber Orchestra, L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestra Philarmonia di Roma, Tokyo Philarmonic Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic, and in France: Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre de Paris, Orchestre National de France, Ensemble Orchestral de Paris, Orchestre National d’Ile de France, Orchestre National de Lille, Orchestre National du Capitole de Toulouse, Orchestre National de Lyon, Orchestre National de Montpellier, Orchestre de Picardie, etc. Conductors with whom he has worked include Jean-Claude Casadesus, Myung-Whun Chung, Edmon Colomer, Christoph Eschenbach, Iván Fischer, Louis Langrée, Friedemann Layer, Lorin Maazel, Kurt Masur, Jacques Mercier, John Nelson, Michel Plasson, Yutaka Sado, Stefan Sanderling, Jerzy Semkow, Leif Segerstam, Simone Young, among many others.
Cedric Tiberghien is also a dedicated chamber musicians and his regular partners include Valérie Aimard, Pierre Amoyal, Marie Hallynck, Sébastien van Kuijk, the Ysaÿe Quartet, the Diotima Quartet, the Psophos Quartet, Alain Planès, Marie Devellereau, Alina Ibragimova and Gweneth Ann-Jeffers.
Cédric Tiberghien made his Carnegie Hall debut in New York in November 2000. In March 2002 he toured Japan with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France under Myung-Whun Chung to huge acclaim, and in the same month he was soloist in the world premiere of Ivan Fedele’s Concerto for 2 Pianos and Orchestra with the Orchestre de Paris conducted by Christoph Eschenbach. During 2005 he is performing as a soloist, in concerto appearances and in chamber music in Paris (Bouffes du Nord, Théâtre de la Ville), London (Wigmore Hall, Covent Garden, City of London Festival) Prague, Germany, Great Britain, Belgium, Columbia, Costa Rica, Holland, Luxemburg, Switzerland. He will also undertake a tour of Mexico.
Cédric Tiberghien is currently receiving exceptional exposure in the UK as one of the lead artists in the BBC’s New Generation Artists scheme. This season (2006-2007) he will appear with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, City of Birmingham Symphony, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra and BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Orchestre de Paris, the Hamburger Philharmoniker, a tour with Het Gelders Orkest as well as debuts with the Sydney Symphony and West Australian Symphony. Projects with the BBC orchestras include the complete cycle of the L.v. Beethoven concertos, and will culminate in a Harmonia Mundi CD recording of Johannes Brahms 1 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Jiri Belohlavek. As a recitalist, Cedric Tiberghien is due to appear at venues including London’s Wigmore Hall and LSO St Luke’s, the Chatelet Paris, the Beethovenfest Bonn, as well as the City of London, Cheltenham and Harrogate festivals. In June 2007 he will be completing the full cycle of L.v. Beethoven’s piano sonatas he has been presenting at the Horrues Festival, Belgium.
Cédric Tiberghien has undertaken many radio recordings in France, Germany, Poland and Moscow. He has also recorded several solo CD's, on Harmonia Mundi, which have been widely acclaimed by the international press: the first devoted entirely to the music of Debussy, and another of sonatas with Marie Hallynck, both on the Harmonia Mundi label. He has also made a CD of music for 2 pianos with Frédéric Aguessy. In February 2003 he released a much lauded new CD of L.v. Beethoven Piano Variations with Harmonia Mundi, later J.S. Bach Partitas, and most recently a disc with Frédéric Chopin and Johannes Brahms’s Ballades His enthusiasm for chamber music is reflected in recordings with cellists Marie Jallynck (Robert Schumann and Grieg sonatas on Harmonia Mundi), Valérie Aimard (French repertoire on Lyrinx, highly praised by the music press), and violinists Amanda Favier (Janacek and Strauss on Lyrinx) and Vadim Tchijik (Gabriel Fauré and Ravel). His first concerto disc, Johannes Brahms’ Concerto No.1 with the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Jiri Belohlavek, will be released in September 2007. |
