Sonya Sutton and The Carya Ensemble, which includes her multi-dimensional work with other musicians. Carya projects include a tour in southern France with women’s chorus and harp this summer, as well as two-piano, choral and opera performances. Since 2013 she has been the Music Director of the World Bank/IMF Chorus, which presents large-scale works for chorus and orchestra twice a year. Freelancing, interim and consulting work take her around the country, drawing from her more than thirty years of experience in building music programs in Episcopal churches, including for twenty years at St. Alban’s in Washington, D.C. where she led professional and volunteer musicians in five ensembles, wrote a weekly blog, and founded a performing arts series which attracted audiences with its innovative programming. Her choirs have sung on tour in Italy, France, Czech Republic, Austria, and in residence at the cathedrals of Wells, Lichfield, and St. David’s. She also served as organist for choirs during residencies at Durham and Canterbury Cathedrals.
In her blog "NotesforaNewDay", Sonya Sutton writes about the intersection of life, spirituality, and the arts, including a series of meditations on J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations (BWV 988). She is married to the Episcopal Bishop of Maryland, the Rt. Reverend Eugene Sutton, and they have four adult children in their blended family. She currently lives in Washington D.C. |
