The Hong Kong-born pianist-tenor, Felix Tsz-Ho Suen, holds Bachelor degree in piano performance and pedagogy (Hong Kong Baptist University), Masters degree and Certificate of Advanced Studies in collaborative piano (Guildhall School of Music and Drama, additional principal study in vocal performance), as wel as Postgraduate Artist Diploma in vocal performance (Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance).
Felix Suen has been invited by Hong Kong Arts Festival, Opera Hong Kong, Musica Viva, Zuni Icosahedron, Alpha & Omega Company, The University of Hong Kong, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and the RTHK Radio 4 to perform as professional artist. His piano collaboration with singers bought him to mainland China (Beijing, Shenzhen, Macau), Japan (Tokyo, Yokohama) and Italy (Pavia). As a tenor soloist he has sung in China (Inna Mongolia, Macau), Taiwan (Taipei), and Germany (Weimar and Rudolstadt).
Felix Suen studied piano with Khong Wing-Yuen and Simon Crawford-Philips. As a specialist in accompaniment and chamber music, Felix received coachings from Graham Johnson and performed in his German lieder concert series. He gave performances extensively in London including the renowned Wigmore Hall, as well as in the former Trinity College of Music. He performed in the master-classes of Helmut Deutsch, Fanny Waterman, Kiri Te Kanawa, Emma Kirkby, and received coachings from Eugene Asti, Iain Burnside, Robin Bowman, Gordon Back, Sarah Walker, Susan McCulloch, Louise Hopkins, and Belcea Quartet.
In singing, Felix Suen studied with Chan Siu-Kwan, Oliver Lo, Adrian Thompson, Omar Ebrahim, Paul Charles Clarke and Neil Baker. He made his operatic debut as Fenton in Nicolai's Die lustigen Weiber von Windsor (Thüringer Landestheater Rudolstadt, Germany), and recently performed Tybalt in Charles Gounod's Romeo et Juliette (Musica Viva, Hong Kong). He has sung a number of tenor solos in sacred repretoire, including J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245 (Evengelist), Magnificat BWV 243, Cantatas BWV 22, BWV 30, BWV 62, BWV 70, BWV 78, BWV 80, BWV 139 and BWV 140, George Frideric Handel's Messiah, Purcell's Ode to St. Cecilia's Day, W.A. Mozart's Requiem, Missa Brevis in F major, and the Coronation Mass, Haydn's Creation and Mass in D minor, Felix Mendelssohn's Come Let Us Sing, C. Gounod's St. Cecilia Mass, Stainer's Cruxifiction, and Maunder's Olivet to Calvary, in collaboration with the Alpha and Omega Company, Hong Kong Oratorio Society, the Hong Kong Bach Choir, the Hong Kong Baptist University Choir and the Hong Kong University Chamber Choir. He was a member of the London Symphony Chorus and the Asian Youth Choir, where he attended the Nipponia Niigata (Niigata Cultural Festival), Japan. He was also the winner of the Hong Kong Youth Singing Festival 2008 (open class male voice). He was a Triniry College London Scholar and choral scholar at the Old Royal Naval College Chapel.
Felix Suen is demanded as a vocal coach/repetiteur. The received trainings from the National Opera Studio, UK, and was the assistant repetiteur at the Hampstead Garden Opera. He has worked in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Le Nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, Donizetti’s L'elisir d'amore, La Fille du Regiment and Lucia di Lammermoor, Rossini's Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Georges Bizet's Carmen, Verdi's La Traviata and Rigoletto, Leoncavallo's I Pagliacci, Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana, Tchaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, Puccini's Turandot, Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, Manotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors, Steve Hui's The Memory Palace of Matteo Ricci; and musicals such as Elton John and Tim Rice's Aida, The Wedding Singer, How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, Guys and Dolls, Grease, The Urinetown, The Music Man JR, Fiddler on the Roof JR, and Disney's Aladdin JR. He also coached singers for concerts and recitals.
In teaching, Felix Suen is experienced in leading music groups. He is the music director and vocal coach of the Opera Hong Kong Summer School, as well as the summer school of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He was the guest speaker (Royal Soloist) in Advanced Diploma in music of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, the advance theory tutor on the Electronic and Composition Diploma of The Hong Kong Productivity Council as well as speaker in collaborative music/vocal workshops for the Hong Kong Youth Choir, Intervarsity Music Ministry Camp, Resonance Chanters and also the Hong Kong Virtuoso Chorus. He was the conductor of the Hong Kong Baptist University Men's Choir, The Department of Music, HKBU, and is currently lecturer of their vocal training class.
Felix Suen's engagements in 2015 include 2 J.S. Bach's cantata concerts and a Baroque vocal recital at the Hong Kong Bach Sacred Music Festival; East Malaysia Bach concert tour in cities of Sarawak and Sabah; Evangelist and tenor solo in J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245) in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia; singing Oronte in G.F. Handel's Alcina with Secret Opera, England; as well as vocal coach for Hairspray JR (OHKSS) and Urinetown (HKUST). |
