The English baritone, David Stuart, graduated from New College, Oxford as an Academical Clerk of the Choir of New College, Oxford with a first class honours degree in music. After two further years there as a Lay Clerk, he went on to study singing for an Master of Music degree in Performance at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama with Brian Parsons. Some years later, on a scholarship, he took a MSt. in Musicology at Oxford (awarded a Distinction), and was granted a further scholarship to pursue Doctoral research.
As a professional baritone David Stuart has sung principal roles in operas spanning from Purcell to Britten throughout the U.K. and has sung in the choruses of Covent Garden, Opéra Comique and Garsington Opera. Operatic roles have included: Schaunard in La Boheme (Handmade Opera and Candlelight Opera) Escamillio in Georges Bizet's Carmen, Guglielmo in W.A. Mozart's Cosí fan Tutte (Starlight Opera), Junius in Benjamin Britten's The Rape of Lucretia (Opera East Productions), Smirnov in William Walton’s The Bear and Simone in Gianni Schicchi (Opera Anywhere), Don Alfonso in Cosi fan tutte (Halesowan Orchestra), Noye in B. Britten's Noye’s Fludde, The Detective in Tangier Tattoo (Glyndebourne Opera), Mackheath in Weil's Threepenny Opera (ENO Baylis programme), Hymen in Purcell's The Fairy Queen (Garsington Opera Concerts) and Don Cassandro in La Finta Semplice, Gaudensio in Rossini's Il Signor Bruschino, Smirnov in W. Walton's The Bear, Aeneas in Dido & Aeneas, Cadmus in Semele, Antonio in W.A. Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro and Mopso in John Caldwell's The Story of Orpheus (all for New Chamber Opera). Future engagements include the title role in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni.
Oratorio repertoire includes J.S. Bach’s St John Passion (BWV 245), Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) & B Minor Mass (BWV 232), Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah, George Frideric Handel’s Messiah and Solomon, Haydn’s Creation, L.v. Beethoven’s Mass in C, Gabriel Fauré’s & Maurice Duruflé’s Requiems, Stainer’s Crucifixion, Purcell’s Come ye Sons of Art and Arvo Pärt’s St John Passion.
David Stuart regularly performs internationally with several of the world’s leading choirs and consorts, including David Stuart has also sung with the Monteverdi Choir (Director: John Eliot Gardiner), Academy of Ancient Music, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Geoffrey Mitchell Choir, Brabant Ensemble, Philharmonia Voices, Musica Beata, C18th Concert Orchestra, Armonico Consort (Director: Christopher Monks), Apollo Voices, Musica Humana. He He has also sung with The Sixteen (Director: Harry Christophers), The King's Consort (Director: Robert King), Gabrieli Consort (Director: Paul McCreesh), Ex Cathedra (Director: Jeffrey Skidmore), A Capella Portuguesa and Stile Antico.
David Stuart has made over 40 recordings, two of which were finalists for a Gramophone Award. He frequently appears as an oratorio soloist and recitalist, and has recorded film and TV soundtracks including Aardman’s Arthur Christmas and Howard Goodall’s How Music Works. He has recently recorded Ralph Vaughan Williams’ The Wasps with Mark Elder and the Hallé Orchestra.Most recently, with Sir John Eliot Gardiner’s Monteverdi Choir, he has performed in Orfée ed Euridice at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Since 2001, David Stuart has tutored undergraduates from several Oxford colleges and visiting students from USA universities in music history. He is currently involved in an Oxford-Princeton University collaboration researching English operas staged in London and New York 1780-1850, for which he has given seminars at both universities and is preparing a chapter for a forthcoming publication accompanying an exhibition at the Bodleian Library. With Peter Hanke and Paul Hedley, he has worked for many years with Exart for the Saïd Business School, Oxford as a singer and co-coach, delivering leadership courses through the arts to business leaders from around the world. |
