The American flautist and arranger, Robert Wooster Stallman, Jr., received his Bachelor of Music degree in 1968, his Master of Music degree in 1971 from the New England Conservatory of Music, as well as the school’s top prize, Chadwick Medal. Mentored by Jean-Pierre Rampal early on, he went to Paris as a Fulbright scholar to study with Rampal, Alain Marion and Gaston Crunelle at the Paris Conservatoire in France (1968-1969).
Robert Stallman made his debut at Merkin Concert Hall in New York City in 1980. With his arrival on the New York scene, Show Business called him "a flawless joy to the ear and the spirit". Since then his solo recordings and his live performances in the Americas, Europe, China and Japan have established Stallman internationally as a most remarkable artist of many facets. His achievements include recitals and chamber music concerts in major venues around the world, such as Washington's Library of.Congress, New York’s Lincoln Center (Alice Tully Hall, Avery Fisher Hall) and Carnegie Recital Hall (Weill Hall), Boston's Symphony Hall, London’s Wigmore Hall and St John's, Smith Square, Paris' Salle Pleyel, Vienna’s Konzerthaus and Tokyo’s Suntory Hall. He was invited to many international festivals such as Mostly Mozart (New York), Musique à Cimiez (France), Dubrovnik (Croatia) Cesky Krumlov (Czech Republic), Kuhmo (Finland), and other festivals in Canada, Yugoslavia, Holland, France, USA, and Japan.
Solo performances include the American Symphony Orchestra, Mostly Mozart Festival Orchestra, Strings of the Philadelphia Orchestra, Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and other orchestras, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Philadelphia Chamber Soloists, Speculum Musicae and Aeolian Chamber Ensemble, as well as collaborations with such artists as Jean-Pierre Rampal, Richard Goode, John Williams, and Plácido Domingo. He was alsoo a guest of the Alexander String Quartet, Muir, Mendelssohn, and Orion String Quartets in the USA, as well as the St. Lawrence Quartet of Canada, the Artis Quartet of Vienna, and both the Vlach and the Martinu Quartets of the Czech Republic. Stallman was a special guest in Vienna’s celebration of the W.A. Mozart 250th, joined by the Martinu Quartet in the Schubertsaal, performing his W.A. Mozart arrangements to warm acclaim.
In 1977, Robert Stallman founded the Cambridge Chamber Players and in 1976 the Marblehead Summer Music Festival in Massachusetts, where for twenty years he created a unique series of chamber music concerts, broadcast regularly on WGBH and PBS and called “special occasions in every sense of the word” by The Boston Globe. It was for these concerts that Stallman began to refine his skills as an arranger and to expand the chamber music repertoire for flute with his re-creation of works by W.A. Mozart, Schubert, J.S. Bach, L.v. Beethoven, Dvorak, Felix Mendelssohn and others. Stallman is also founder, director and artistic director of the Brooklyn Friends of Chamber Music (from 1990), and member of Trio Bell'Arte.
Robert Stallman taught at the New England Conservatory of Music (1978-1982), Queens College, City University of New York (from 1980), Academie Internationale d'Eté, Nice, France (1985), and Boston Conservatory (1986-1990). Devoted to developing the next generations of musical talent, Stallman conducted numerous master-classes at schools and venues across the USA, as well as at Académie Internationale, Domaine Forget and Montréal Conservatoire in Canada, National Conservatory of Mexico, Festival Internacional de Flautista in Brazil, Hochschule für Musik in Mannheim, Académie Internationale d’Eté in Nice (France), Ameropa Festival in Prague, Odessa Conservatory, Konitachi School of Music in Tokyo, and the Shanghai Conservatory, as well as in England.
Robert Stallman recorded over dozen universally acclaimed solo discs on VAI Audio, ASV, Arco Diva, Biddulph, MHS, CBS Masterworks, Koch International, Northeastern and other labels. In 2006, Stallman and his wife, Hannah Woods, founded the Bogner's Café label, bringing Stallman's esteemed arrangements of works by classical composers to new audiences. The label's inaugural release, "Mozart-Stallman New Quintets for Flute and Strings" (2007), which Stallman recorded with the Martinu Quartet and violist Karel Untermüller, was aired on NPR's "Performance Today" and "Weekend Edition" and became an enduring favorite on classical radio stations across the USA. "New Schubert Works for Flute & Strings" (2009) reunites these same musicians in the performance of three of Schubert's early works, re-created by Stallman as two Quartets and a Quintet. Stallman participated in radio programs in Boston, New York, Nationwide USA, and Canada.
Robert Stallman made it his mission to expand the flute repertoire with apt transcriptions, gratifying flutists everywhere. With over 70 publications from prominent houses in the USA and the Europe, he emerged as the preeminent editor and arranger of flute music active today. His works are published with International Music Co., Schott, and G. Schirmer (including J.S. Bach. W.A. Mozart, Gabriel Fauré. Dvořák, Schubert, Berlioz). Meanwhile Stallman’s communicative gift inspires composers. Major works dedicated to him include the Dodgson and McKinley Flute Concertos, both recorded by Stallman, and Kukal’s new Flautianna Concerto, which he premieres in 2009 and 2010 with the Czech Chamber Orchestra.
His honors include the Chadwick Medal from New England Conservatory, a Fulbright grant to study at the Paris Conservatoire, a Koussevitsky Fellowship and the Jackson Prize at Tanglewood, a soloist grant from the National Endowment for the Arts, and listings in the International Who’s Who in Music, Who’s Who in America, Who’s Who in American Education. and others.
