The French cellist, Jean de Spengler, studied the cello with André-Lévy (1894-1982), who recorded J.S. Bach's Cello Suites in 1962 at the age of 67. His mother told him about hearing him play them when she was 11 years old, in Les Haudères in the canton of Valais in Switzerland. Spengler was most fortunate to be able to study them with André Lévy at a later date as well as in Vienna between 1973 and 1977, on recommendation by André Lévy, with André Navarra (1911-1988), another great performer of J.S. Bach's Cello Suites, who recorded them in 1977.
Jean de Spengler is active as a cellist since 1979. He was co-soloist at the Philharmonie de Lorraine in Metz, then, starting in 1983, the solo cellist at the Orchestre de l’Opéra National de Lorraine in Nancy. Since 1984, he is co-founder member of the Quatuor Stanislas. With this ensemble he has given nearly one thousand concerts, presented several hundred works, including a large number of world premieres, recorded more than twenty discs and undertaken concert tours on four of the five continents He is also a member of Trio Europa. |
