The American choral conductor and music pedagogue, Gerald Sousa, received his Bachelor of Music degree in Voice and Piano (1969-1972) and his Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting (1972-1973) from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his doctorate in Choral Conducting, summa cum laude, from Indiana University (1976-1980).
Gerald Sousa has held the position of Music Director of the Bloomington Chamber Singers since 1990. Under his artistic direction, the Bloomington Chamber Singers have performed the great choral-orchestral masterworks, commissioned new works from area composers, and sung a wide variety of music drawn from the a cappella choral repertoire. Widely recognized for his innovative programming and consistently outstanding artistic achievements, Sousa has developed the ensemble into a vital part of the Bloomington musical scene.
Gerald Sousa has held positions at the University of New Orleans, Dartmouth College, and the University of North Carolina, and has performed professionally at the Aspen Summer Music Festival. Since September 2008, he is Director of Music at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Bloomington, and is active throughout the region as an arts advocate and technology consultant. He has served on the boards of local arts organizations, including the former Bloomington Area Arts Council, which he led as President for 5 years (2003-2008). |
