The Malaysian soprano, Gynger Soh Bee Teng, began to love singing during her involvement in folk song singing competitions during her early childhood. This led her in the direction of classical music, performing for a number of years with a choir. She began formal vocal lessons at 15, which gave her the impetus to explore classical singing and unlock the full potential of her vocal ability. She holds a Licentiate of Trinity College London Certificate (LTCL) & Associate of Trinity College of London (ATCL) in Voice Recital and Performance (2008-2009), and obtained "The Best Student Award" in her music studies at the Malaysian Institute of Art (MIA) (2003-2005). In 2013-2014, she was singing in an opera program in Brisbane, Australia organized by Cuskelly College of Music. She obtained a brilliant opportunity to work with International opera singers - Joseph Ward, Rosario La Spina, Milijana Nicolic, Magaret Schindler, Shaun Brown and Conductors - Richard Lewis, Raymond Lawrence.
Gynger Soh has been competing in singing since she was 16 years old. She won First Runner Up in the Cai Duan Ming Chinese Art Song Solo Singing Competition for 3 years running, from 1999 to 2002. She was also a winner of the National Solo Singing Competition and obtained a full scholarship to study at the Malaysian Institute of Art. In the 30th and 31th Central Malaysia Regional Singing Competition in 2004 and 2005, she was named overall champion; she also emerged as winner in the Philharmonic of Selangor Song Fest 2005.
Gynger Soh played the role as Musetta in La Boheme (November 2012), Susanna in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Zerlina in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Despina in W.A. Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte, Juliette in Romeo and Juliette. Aside of Opera performances, She is frequently invited as a solo performer for concerts such as J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243) performed in the Lutheran Church, Kuala Lumpur in 2013, and the “Sing Unto Lord 2012″ touring concert organized by Yin Qi Ministry.
In 2010, Gynger Soh was selected to represent Malaysia in the Asian Youth Choir, touring in the Philippines. She was also a member of the Dithyrambic Singers from 2005 to 2011, travelling to Hong Kong, Korea, Indonesia, and Singapore for festivals and competitions. She was invited to sing as a choir member of at Distinguished Concerts International New York (DCINY) in New York City for the premiere performance of Eric Whitacre’s composition The City & The Sea in Carnegie Hall (April-May 2010). Currently, she is contributing a Hymns Choral recording led by Malaysia well-known soprano Cecilia Yap for a fund raising project for The Reformed Evangelical Church, Kuala Lumpur.
Gynger Soh has been very active in the field of education since 2003. In the year 2014, she formed a ladies chamber group - The Opera Bridesmaids who has successfully made their debut concert in December. She has also set up master-classes for vocal enthusiasts with well-known singers and musicians. In 2013, she started organising a nationwide children’s solo singing competition, Voices in Bloom. She is currently in the process of developing a vocal workshop for children, complete with excerpts for performance. Currently, she is a vocal tutor and Academy Director of the Young Choral Academy Taipan USJ, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Gynger Soh musical acrivities have included: Choral Coach & Conductor in Chong Hwa Alumni Choir in Kluang Johor Malaysia (January 2005-December 2008; Soprano singer in Dithyrambic Singers in Kuala Lumpur (2003-2009s); Guest Singer in Asian Youth Choir (June 2010); Guest Solo Singer in Yin Qi Ministry of Sacred Music (October-November 2012) - Ten Christian Singers Touring Concert" Sing Unto Lord"; Vocal Tutor at Young Choral Academy Kuala Lumpur (January 2011-January 2013); Academy Director & Vocal Tutor at Young Choral Academy USJ in Kuala Lumpur (January 2012-January 2013); Adjudicator at Interscholastic Association of Southeast Asian Schools in Kuala Lumpur (IASAS) (March 2014); Choral Coach of Chung Hwa Damansara (January 2013- Present); Soprano in Kuala Lumpur Chamber Choir (May 2013-Present). |
