Chang-Yong Shin (Piano)

Born: April 15, 1994 - Anyang, Kyonggi-Do, South Korea

The Korean pianist, Chang-Yong [Changyong] Shin, studied with Choong-Mo Kang at the Korea National Institute for the Gifted in Arts (2009-2011) and Mari Kwon while a student at Yewon School 2007-2010). He received his Bachelor of Music and was awarded the Paul G. Mechlin Scholarship from the Curtis Institute of Music in May 2016 where he studied with Robert McDonald (2011-2016). Since September 2016, he is continuing his studies with Robert McDonald in the Masters program at The Juilliard School where he was awarded a full scholarship. Robert McDonald said, “ChangYong Shin is a young artist of exceptional gifts—a brilliantly complete instrumentalist whose playing is always at the service of the music and its expressive possibilities.” He had joined a master-class with legendary pianists Paul Badura-Skoda, Dong-il Han, Gary Graffman, Julian Martin, Hiroko Nakamura, Marios Papadopoulos.

Chang-Yong Shin has won prizes at competitions around the world. He was the First Prize winner of the Kookmin Ilbo & Hansei University music competition (2005); Grand Prizes at the C. Bechstein & Samik music competition (2006), the Hankook Ilbo Competition (2006), and the CBS Competition (2008); First Prize at the Ewha & Kyeonghyang competition (2008), Third Prize at the Chopin Junior Cmpetition and the Eumyeon Competition in 2005. In 2010, he won Third Prize and two special prizes (Romantic period and Master Class) at the Eastman Young Artists International Piano Competition in America. He is the winner of the First Prize in the 2016 Hilton Head International Piano Competition, and the 1st Prize at the Seoul International Music Competition (2017). Also, he got silver medal at Grand prix Animato International Piano Competition and 5th Prize and audience Prize at the Sendai International Music Competition. He has also earned First Prize at several national competitions in Korea.

Chang-Yong Shin has performed in prestigious venues, including two solo recitals and a chamber concert at Kumho Art Hall, a “Young Mozart Concert” at The Mozart Hall, the Young Musicians Festival at Youngsan Art Hall, and the Korean traditional music festival at the Recital Hall of The Seoul Arts Center, and the and the Gala concert of the Ewha & Kyeonghyang compeititon at Baroque Chamber Hall. He has also been invited several times to perform at the UJung Art Center in Korea. He had a success New York debut recital at the Carnegie Hall with standing ovation. New York Concert Review wrote: "He alternates between extreme fire and melting sensitivity, each of which gains by contrast to the other." Besides his accomplishment as a solo recitalist, he has performed with prestige Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, Sendai Philharmonic, Hilton Head Symphony, Bucheon Philharmonic and Daejeon Philharmornic.

Chang-Yong Shin's variety performances spotlight him as a great musician in the world. He performed at the prestige Salle Cortot Hall in Paris as a selected artist from the Animato foundation. Additionally, He not only presented a recital in Costal California University and Rice Music House also he gave master-classes to young talented musicians in University of Tennessee and a solo recital as one of the artists at the Evelyn Miller Young Pianist Series. He also gave two solo recitals and master-class at the Green Lake Festival of Music in summer, 2017. He recorded his first CD with the Steinway & Sons label in 2017 and will be released in 2018. (New York City, New York).

In addition to performing as soloist, Chang-Yong Shin has been widely recognized as a chamber musician. He has given a chamber music recital at the invitation of the Kumho Art Hall Seoul, Korea, and joined the Young Artist Festival of Chamber Music as a member of a Korean chamber group. Additionally, he has performed recitals with his Curtis Institute of Music colleagues in Paris(The Louvre museum), Sarasota, Pittsburgh, New York, Boston, San Francisco and Philadelphia. He currently lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
