The German baritone and composer, Timothy Sharp, obtained his Diploma in Singing from the Hochschule für Musik "Hanns Eisler" in Berlin (1992-1999). Having studied with masters like Hans Hotter and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau he developed a great love for the German Lieder repertoire. He won several national and international competitions.
Timothy Sharp made a name for himself as a Lieder singer early on, but is also a sought-after soloist on the concert stage with performances in Berlin (Konzerthaus/Philharmonie), Munich (Herkulessaal/ Philharmonie am Gasteig), Stuttgart (Liederhalle), Frankfurt (Alte Oper), Essen (Philharmonie); at the Wiener Musikverein, Styriarte, Schleswig-Holstein Musikfestival, Schwetzinger Festspielen, Ludwigsburger Festspielen, Händel-Festspielen in Halle and Bachfest Leipzig.
Timothy Sharp has a wide range of styles at his disposal: from the Baroque in historical performance practice such as the title role in Monteverdi's Il ritorno d'Ulisse in patria, to "classical" opera roles such as the Count in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, Papageno in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Marcello in La Bohéme or Eugene Onegin to the music of the present and the 20th century. He took part in numerous first and premiere performances in the contemporary field. Some highlights were the role of Paul in Philip Glass' Les enfants terribles, the German premiere of which he played, or Il Malaspina in S. Sciarrino's Luci mie traditrici. This opera was recorded and awarded the Choc du Monde and was voted CD-Of-The-Year by the London's Guardian.
Timothy Sharp was an ensemble member at Stadttheater Hildesheim (July 1997-August 2000) and Bayerische Staatoper in Munich (August 2000-July 2002). Guest concert and opera engagements have taken him to the Bayerische Staatsoper München, Oper Köln, Staatstheater Nürnberg, Bühnen Wuppertal (September 2009-April 2010), Nationaltheater Mannheim, Badische Staatstheater Karlsruhe (December 2001-November 2007), Staatstheater Nürnberg, Staatoper Unter den Linden in Berlin (since March 2010), Teatro San Carlo in Naples and Teatro La Fenice in Venice and Chicago Opera Theater. Highlights of his career were projects with Nikolaus Harnoncourt in Vienna (Musikverein), Salzburg (Bachfest), Paris (Salle Pleyel), Metz and at the Styriarte. Some of these concerts were radio recorded and broadcast on ORF and Deutschlandradio Kultur.
In the new production of S. Sciarrino's Macbeth at the Staatsoper im Schillertheater in Berlin, Timothy Sharp presented himself under the direction of Jürgen Flimm. Then he was able to succeed in the same house in the title role of the chamber opera Hans im Glück (world premiere) by David Coleman. Appearances in recent years have taken him to the Landestheater Innsbruck, Oper Halle and Stadtische Bühnen Bremerhaven.
Radio recordings of concerts and recitals were made by NDR, SWR, ORF, RAI and Polish Radio. A first highly acclaimed solo CD with songs by Schubert "Nacht und Träume" was released by Roner Records. A new edition of this CD is now available on all streaming services. In spring 2015 the CD "Richard Strauss - Ein Leben in Liedern" with Lieder by Richard Strauss was released together with his piano partner, Jan Roelof Wolthuis.
Timothy Sharp taught singing at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater München (October 2009-February 2016). Since September 2016, he has been a professor of singing at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Mannheim. He is is also a composer of piano and choral music. He currently lives in Mannheim, Germany. |
