The American mezzo-soprano, Cara Search, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree graduated in Voice Performance from Schulich School of Music of McGill University (2013-May 2017), with minors in German Language and Early Music. Soprano Tracy Smith-Bessette was her primary teacher.
Cara Search first encountered classical music in 20th and 21st century songs that she studied in her rural New York hometown with new music vocalist Lucy Dhegrae. Now pursing new music wherever it will take her, she has sung/whispered/played the gong with McGill’s Contemporary Music Ensemble under the baton of Guillaume Bourgogne, premiered chamber music at the Aldeburgh Festival (UK), studied free improvisation, workshopped with Stuttgart-based NOISE-BRIDGE duo, worked with composer Philippe Leroux and numerous SOCAN award winning student composers bringing electroacoustic projects to life in McGill’s acclaimed Digital Composition Studio. An abundantly curious interpreter of art song, she studied under Michael McMahon and has participated in master-classes with Gerald Finley and Julian Prégardien. She is the recipient of the Duncan L. Campbell Memorial Award for excellence in art song and oratorio repertoire.
Cara Search has enjoyed two busy seasons with Opera McGill in the roles of Ruggiero in George Frideric Handel's Alcina, Eduige (cover) in G.F. Handel's Rodelina, The Juggler in Sid the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing, Julie in Speed Dating Tonight!, Anna Alcott (cover) in Little Women and in scenes as Dorabella in W.A. Mozart's Così fan tutte, Charlotte in A Little Night Music and the Old Lady in Leonard Bernstein's Candide.
During her studies at McGill University, Cara Search was chorister at St. James United Church (October 2013-April 2015) and at Shaare Zion Congregation (April 2015-April 2016). After her studies, she has worked in Production with International Contemporary Ensemble in New York City (May-September 2017); Audience Services at Richard B.
