The German baritone, Meik Schwalm, received first singing lessons with Margot Kaiser Stodiek and Peter Anders. From 1997 he studied at the Hochschule für Musik in Detmold with Professor Thomas Quasthoff, and concluded in 2003 with the artistic diploma.
Already during his studies Meik Schwalm was engaged for several productions at the Landestheater Detmold. So he was seen in Don Carlos, Hänsel und Gretel, Zar und Zimmermann, Manon Lescaut, Der jüngste Tag (Giselher Klebe) und La Notte di un Nevrastenico (Nino Rota). Furthermore, he appeared as a guest in 2002 at the Klosterfestspielen Rheine as Figaro in Le Nozze di Figaro and in 2004 at the Easter Festival Rheinsberg in the dual role of Herakles/Oberpriester in Gluck's Alkeste.
With the premiere of opera saga Kommander Kobayashi Meik Schwalm made in January 2005 his debut at the Hamburgischen Staatsoper. The Staatsoper unter den Linden in Berlin engaged him for the title role in Chief Joseph by Hans Zender, and for the roles of Angelotti in Tosca, Montano in Otello and Morales in Carmen, as well as for another premiere Seven Attempted Escapes from Silence. In 2006 he sang at the Theater Bielefeld the role of Tschang Ling in Zemlinsky's Kreidekreis and at the Théâtre du Capitole in Toulouse, the Meister Hans Foltz in Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg by R. Wagner. In 2007 he appeared at the Bregenz Festival as Hel Helson in the opera Paul Bunyan by Benjamin Britten. The premiere was broadcast live on 3Sat TV channel.
For the 2006-2007 season Meik Schwalm is a permanent ensemble member at the heater Bielefeld and was heard here in the roles of Il Conte Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, Phorbas in Oedipe (George Enescu), as Prospero in La Boure (Zdenek Fibich), Doristo in L'arbore di Diana (Vicente y Soler) as Frederick in Lakmé, Prof. Hoggins in Erwin das Naturtalent (Mike Svoboda) (Mike Svoboda). In this season he made his debut as Marcello in La Bohème followed by his role debuts as Dottore Malatesta in Don Pasquale and as the Graf in Capriccio. |
