The Austrian baritone, Daniel Schmutzhard, studied during his schooldays at the Tiroler Landeskonservatorium with Karlheinz Hanser and continued his education at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst Wien with Professor Ralf Döring. He has won numerous international competitions, including the Mozart Competition in Salzburg and the international song contest 'Das Lied' launched by Thomas Quasthoff.
Prestigious concert highlights are Schubert´s Winterreise at the Wiener Konzerthaus and a recital with the soprano Annette Dasch at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg. At the Leipziger Gewandhaus he will sing Orff´s Carmina Burana, under the baton of Tomas Netopil the baritone part in Sergei Rachmaninov´s Die Glocken at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino and Gustav Mahler-Lieder with the Tiroler Landesorchester in his hometown Innsbruck. In the near future he will have his debut at the Bayerische Staatsoper München, the Opéra National de Paris and his debut with the Wiener Philharmoniker.
Conductors and stage directors with whom Daniel has worked, are amongst others Daniel Barenboim, Sir Simon Rattle, Sebastian Weigle, Franz Welser-Möst, Bertrand de Billy, René Jacobs, Leopold Hager, Ulf Schirmer, Michael Güttler and Johannes Wildner, and Robert Carsen, Jossi Wieler, William Kentridge, Marco Arturo Marelli, Vincent Boussard, Alfred Kirchner, Ernst Josef Köpplinger. In addition to his work at the opera stage Daniel Schmutzhard has also an excellent reputation as a concert, recital and oratorio singer. He has given concerts and song recitals in the Wiener Musikverein and Konzerthaus, Berlin Philharmonie, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, Kölner Philharmonie, Salle Pleyel Paris, Salzburger Osterfestspiele and the Salzburger Mozartwoche.
Highlights of the last seasons were concerts with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin in Berlin, Amsterdam and Rotterdam, his recital debut at the Wiener Konzerthaus and at the Festival in Monfalcone. From 2005 to 2011 he was engaged at the Vienna Volksoper and was awarded at numerous international competitions. In 2008 he appeared at the Salzburger Festspiele, Theater an der Wien, Tage der Alten Musik Innsbruck, Glyndebourne Touring Opera Opera (Papageno), and could also be heard as Pagageno in the new production of Die Zauberflöte under René Jacobs at the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence. This production was published on CD by Harmonia Mundi and was awarded with numerous international prizes. In 2010 he made his debut at the Berlin State Opera in George Frideric Handel's Agrippina. Highlights during the 2010-2011 season were the world premiere of Metanoia by Jens Joneleit under Daniel Barenboim at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden Berlin, concert performance of Die Zauberflöte with René Jacobs during the Mozart Week in Salzburg, Harlekin in Ariadne auf Naxos at the Wiener Staatsoper, and Orff's Carmina Burana as well as F. Liszt's Legende der heiligen Elisabeth at Theater an der Wien.
Since the 2011-2012 season Daniel Schmutzhard has been performing at the Frankfurt Opera Guglielmo in Cosi fan tutte, Papageno in Die Zauberflöte, Conte in Le Nozze di Figaro, Figaro in Barbiere di Siviglia, Eisenstein in Fledermaus, Marcello in La Bohème, Wolfram in Tannhäuser, Heerrufer in Lohengrin, Albert in Werther and Rodrigo in Don Carlo. He has appeared as Sharpless in Madama Butterfly at the Berlin State Opera, performed Papageno with René Jacobs in Amsterdam, Brussels, Rome, Barcelona and Lisbon, recorded the part for Harmonia Mundi, made his debut at Opéra National de Paris with Philippe Jordan conducting and at Bavarian State Opera Munich as well as at Bregenz Festival. High class concert engagements have taken the artist to Schubertiade Schwarzenberg, to the Konzerthaus in Berlin and Vienna as well as to Verona. At Leipzig Gewandhaus he sang Orff's Carmina Burana, with Dresdner Philharmonie he appeared in Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem, conducted by Bertrand de Billy, and he sang The Bells under the direction of Tomas Netopil at Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino.
Daniel Schmutzhard began the 2012-2013 season as Marcello in La Bohème at the Oper Frankfurt, where he is a member since last season. During the season performed Conte in Nozze di Figaro, Eisenstein in Fledermaus and Heerrufer in Lohengrin. In October 2012 he returned to the Staatsoper unter den Linden and sing Sharpless in Madama Butterfly. Under René Jacobs he was on tour as Papageno in Zauberflöte in Amsterdam, Brussels, Rome, Barcelona and Lissabon. At the Komische Oper Berlin he sang the concert version of Weill´s Kuhhandel. In summer 2013 Daniel Schmutzhard sang Papageno in a new production of Zauberflöte at the Bregenzer Festspiele.
In the season 2014-2015 Daniel Schmutzhard will have his debut with Wiener Philharmoniker, singing Schubert’s Lazarus in concerts in Vienna and Rome. Further concerts will bring him with Haydn’s Jahreszeiten to RIAS-Kammerchor and the Berliner Philharmoniker, with Gustav Mahler’s Rückert-Liedern to Orchestre National de Lille and with Haydn’s Schöpfung to the Palace of Arts Budapest. He sings recitals at Schubertiade Hohenems as well as at Oper Frankfurt. As fix member of this opera house he will be heard as Marcello in La Bohème, Ford IN Falstaff, Harlekin IN Ariadne auf Naxos and Don Giovanni. The Vienna Premiere of HK Gruber’s Geschichten aus dem Wienerwald brings him to Theater an der Wien. Future plans include new productions at Vlaamse Opera Antwerpen, at Theater an der Wien as well as his debut at Bayreuth Festival. |
