Susanne Schlegel (Mezzo-soprano)

Born: Germany

The German mezzo-soprano, Susanne Schlegel, studied music education at the Folkwang-Hochschule Essen, and singing at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe.

Already during her study period Susanne Schlegel began an active concert career. Through numerous performances with renowned orchestras, including the SWF Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden, Bayerisches Staatsorchester, Bochumer Symphoniker and Camerata Bern, she has made herself a name as an oratorio soloist both at home and abroad. She has worked with conductors such as Wolfgang Schäfer, Jörg Straube, Wolfgang Helbich, Martin Schmidt and Andre Charlet.

As an opera singer, Susanne Schlegel was a guest at the Stadttheater Pforzheim, the Badischen Staatstheater Karlsruhe and at the Theater Nordhausen, also from 1993 to 1997 she was an ensemble member of the Stadttheater Hildesheim. Then she turned with increased intensity to resume her actual artistic focus on the oratorio, and in recent years is increasingly on the Lieder of the Romantic period.

Since 1999 Susanne Schlegel directs a singing class at the Hochschule für Künste Bremen. She also taught at the Musikhochschule Karlsruhe and at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater Hannover.

The duo Susanne Schlegel and Jürgen Plich was found in 2004 Since then the two have performed in numerous recitals. Their diverse repertoire includes works by Felix Mendelssohn, Schubert and Wolf, and Lieder cycles of L.v. Beethoven, Dvorak, Schumann and Johannes Brahms. Their concerts have always a programmatic idea, such as employment with a composer, a poet or even a general thematic ideas.

“Stimmlich lässt die wunderbare Sängerin keine Wünsche offen. Sie verfügt über ein großes Volumen, eine beneidenswerte Stimmkultur, Modulationsfähigkeit und Artikulation. Mit dem vielseitigen Pianisten Jürgen Plich hat sie einen erfahrenen und kreativen Begleiter, mit dem sie jedes Lied zu einem kleinen Kunstwerk macht.” - the music critic Dr. Wolfgang Tulaszewski on a Lieder recital of the duo Schlegel/Plich
