The Italian conductor, composer, musicologist and flautist, Federico Maria Sardelli, studied philosophy at the Università di Pisa.
In 1984 Federico Maria Sardelli founded the Baroque orchestra Modo Antiquo, The orchestra made its debut with the first performance in modern times of Jean-Baptiste Lully's Ballet des Saisons. He appears with the orchestra at major festivals and concert halls throughout Europe as both soloist and conductor. He is regularly invited to the most prestigious European concert halls. He is the Main Conductor of the Accademia Barocca di S. Cecilia (Rome), and since 2006 he has been Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra Filarmonica di Torino. He appears as a guest conductor with many symphony orchestras, including the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, Staatskapelle Halle, Kammerakademie Potsdam, Moscow State Chamber Orchestra, Real Filharmonia de Galicia, Arena di Verona, Orchestra da Camera di Mantova, etc.
Federico Maria Sardelli has recorded more than forty albums as soloist and conductor, published by the labels Naïve, Deutsche Grammophon, Sony, Brilliant, Tactus. Some of them were done in co-production with the German broadcast company Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WRD 3).A notable protagonist in the Antonio Vivaldi renaissance, he performed, recorded and edited a large number of A. Vivaldi compositions, often in world premiere (Arsilda, regina di Ponto, Orlando Furioso, Tito Manlio, Motezuma, L'Atenaide, etc.). He is one of the top artists of the Vivaldi Edition by Naïve. He has been nominated twice for the Grammy Award (1997 and 2000).
During the season 2014-2015 season he conducted the world premiere of a recently discovered version of Orlando Fuorioso by Vivaldi, wrote to be performed in Rome in 1714, with the Accamedia Barocca of Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, George Frideric Handel's Alcina with the Moscow Chamber Orchestra at Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow, Orfeo ed Euridice at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, the annual Gala concert of Deutsche Händel-Solisten at the Internationalen Händel-Festspiele in Karlsruhe, as well as many symphonic concerts on the podium of Russian National Orchestra and Orchestra of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence. He opened the 2015-2016 season with his debut on the podium of Teatro Regio di Torino leading, for the first time in Italy, Cécile Roussat and Julien Lubek's production of Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell, followed by his return on the podium of Orchestra of Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence and of Accamedia Barocca of Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome.
Alongside his career in the concert hall, Federico Maria Sardelli is also extremely active as a musicologist. He is a member of the musicological committee of the Istituto Italiano Antonio Vivaldi, at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini in Venice. He has published many musicological essays and critical editions, , among them "Vivaldi's Music for Flute and Recorder", Ashgate Publishing, 2007, in the translation of Michael Talbot. He is general editor of the collection of facsimile editions Vivaldiana and of the Opere Incomplete (SPES, Florence). For his artistic merits, on November 28, 2009, the Government of Tuscany decorated Federico Maria Sardelli with the Gonfalone d'Argento, the highest medal honour of the Regione Toscana.
In July 2007 Peter Ryom appointed Federico Maria Sardelli as his heir to continue his monumental work of cataloging the music of A. Vivaldi, and since then Federico Maria is responsible for the Ryom-Verzeichnis (RV). In December 2014 he and Francisco Javier Lupiáñez Ruiz, a Spanish violinist on a Master’s programme at the Royal Conservatory of Music at The Hague, independently identified the earliest known work of A. Vivaldi, which he has catalogued as RV 820.
In 2015 Federico Maria Sardelli published his first novel L'affare Vivaldi (Sellerio), a historical investigation into the disappearance of A. Vivaldi's manuscripts. His next book on music is forthcoming: the Catalogue of A. Vivaldi's musical concordances, by Fondazione G. Cini and Olschki. In addition to his musical activities, ee is also a painter, engraver and satirical writer. He currently lives in Florence, Italy. |
