The English tenor, Matthew Sandy, studied Music at King’s College, Cambridge, where he held a choral Scholarship. With King's College Choir Cambridge, he toured extensively both in the UK and internationally, and was a soloist for concerts at venues including the Royal Albert Hall and the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, also for BBC television and radio broadcasts, and commercial recordings for the King’s label. In 2010, he represented Cambridge University in the Sir Anthony Lewis Memorial Prize Singing Competition (administered by the Musica Brittanica Trust), winning first prize. In September of that year, he was invited to sing for the Beatification of John Henry Newman during the Papal visit of Benedict XVI, broadcast by BBC television. Sandy went on to study singing at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, studying with Susan Waters.
In concert Matthew Sandy has performed Igor Stravinsky's Mass with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Valery Gergiev and MacMillan Lament of Mary, Queen of Scots at the Barbican Concert Hall; I. Stravinsky's Pulcinella with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s Youth Academy Orchestra conducted by Michael Seal in the Birmingham Town Hall; Biber's Missa Christi Resurgentis and J.S. Bach's Christ Lag In Todesbanden (BWV 4) with The English Concert conducted by Laurence Cummings at Wigmore Hall; J.S. Bach's Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland conducted by Roger Sayer with the choir of the Temple Church (broadcast BBC Radio 3), Puccini's Messa di Gloria, George Frideric Handel's Judas Maccabaeus, Haydn's The Creation, Paukenmesse and Leighton's Crucifixus Pro Nobis in King’s College Chapel conducted by Stephen Cleobury (this last broadcast with the King's College Choir Cambridge on BBC Radio 3). Other concert performances have included J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244), St John Passion (BWV 245), Mass in G major (BWV 236), Benjamin Britten's St Nicolas, Canticles II, IV & V, Rejoice in the Lamb, G.F. Handel's Messiah, Theodora, Samson, Monteverdi's Vespers (1610), W.A. Mozart's Requiem, Sergei Rachmaninov's All-Night Vigil, Stainer's Crucifixion, Ralph Vaughan Williams' Serenade to Music and On Wenlock Edge.
On the opera stage, Matthew Sandy has worked for festivals including Glyndebourne (Purcell's The Fairy Queen in 2012) and the festival d’Aix en Provence (W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte in 2014). In 2012, he sang the role of Testo in a staged production of Monteverdi's Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda at the Wallace Collection with Andrew Lawrence-King. His other operatic roles include Sorceress in Purcell's Dido and Aneas, Sellem in I. Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, Flute in B. Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, General Sir Philip Wingrave in B. Britten's Owen Wingrave and Peter Quint in B. Britten's The Turn of the Screw.
Matthew Sandy is also a keen exponent of the song repertoire and chamber music. He has worked with leading experts on song repertoire, participating in projects coordinated by Iain Burnside, and Lieder recital series for Eugene Asti and Graham Johnson, performing at Wigmore Hall, London Symphony Orchestra St Lukes and King’s Place. He has a particular passion for English song; in 2015 he sang a selection of songs by the composer William Denis Browne for a concert at King's Place to mark the centenary of the Gallipoli campaign, joined by singers from Turkish State Opera. Matthew has also sung for lecture recitals with Dr Kate Kennedy (Girton College, Cambridge) at the Queen Elizabeth Concert Hall and the Wymondham Festival, and with Laura Roberts (Guildhall School of Music & Drama) at Wigmore Hall. |
