The American tenor, Joshua Sanders, obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2015); and his Master of Music degree in Opera from the Manhattan School of Music, where he studied with Ruth Golden (2015-2017). He was a 2015 finalist in the Gerda Lissner song competition, and in the same year was awarded a study grant from Wolf Trap Opera. In 2016, he was an honored recipient of awards from the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and the Heida Hermanns International Voice Competition. He was a winner of the 2017 Bel Canto Vocal Scholarship Foundation's 30th annual competition; a winner of the prestigious Amber Capital Scholarship from The Opera Foundation in 2017; and the winner of the Sachi Liebergesell award from the 2019 Opera Index Competition. He won second prize at the 2019 Opera at Florham Vocal Competition and third prize at the 2018 Grand Stage International Song and Lieder Competition. He was also a 2020 Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions national semi-finalist.
In 2015, Joshua Sanders made his principal debut with Madison Opera as Tobias Ragg in Sweeney Todd. He trained for two summers as a studio artist with Wolf Trap Opera where he performed roles in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, and John Corigliano’s The Ghosts of Versailles. In May 2017 he returned to Wolf Trap Opera to workshop and perform in the premiere of Listen, Wilhelmina! a new children’s opera written by David Hanlon and Kathleen Kelly. In the summer of 2017, he completed a residency as a Bel Canto Young Artist at the Caramoor Festival, where he sang the role of Il conte in Manuel García's Un avvertimento ai gelosi, and covered the role of Gualtiero in Bellini's Il pirata.
Joshua Sanders made his international debut at Teatro Regio di Torino where he was an artist in residence during the 2017-2018 season after winning the Opera Foundation's Amber Capital Scholarship. While at Teatro Regio he sang roles in Tristan und Isolde, Turandot, Salome, Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo, Verdi’s I Lombardi alla prima crociata, and Le nozze di Figaro. In May 2018, he made his house debut at Deutsche Oper Berlin in Un ballo in Maschera. In August 2018, he returned to the USA for a debut at the Berkshire Opera Festival as Matteo Borsa in Verdi's Rigoletto. Highlights of operatic engagements in the USA include Don Ottavio in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni with Heartbeat Opera, Matteo Borsa in Rigoletto with Berkshire Opera Festival, Tobias Ragg in Sweeney Todd with Madison Opera, and a run of performances of Frank Martin’s rarely heard Le Vin Herbé co-produced by Wolf Trap Opera and Washington Concert Opera.
As a concert artist, Joshua Sanders made his debut with the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra in 2016 as the the titular character (Imaginary Voice) Voice in Berlioz’s Lélio. He made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2019 with the Manhattan School of Music Philharmonic in a gala concert to commemorate the school’s centennial anniversary. Other concert highlights include debuts with The Westchester Oratorio Society as the tenor soloist in J.S. Bach's Magnificat (BWV 243), and performances at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City as part of Lee Mingwei’s Sonic Blossom exhibit. Additional concert credits include: tenor soloist in J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245), George Frideric Handel’s Messiah, and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Pilgrims Journey and Serenade to Music. In April 2020 he will make his debut with the New York Festival of Song. |
