Gustavo Sánchez (Conductor)

Born: Horadada, Alicante, Spain

The Spanish conductor, Gustavo Sánchez, studied Flute with Juan Francisco Cayuelas and Composition with Manuel Seco de Arpe at the Conservatorio Superior de Murcia. After this, between 1991 and 1996, he studied orchestral conducting at the Vienna Conservatory with Professors Reinhard Schwarz and Georg Mark, graduating with honors. Since 1995 he has conducted several orchestras, notably the Symphony Orchestra of Murcia, Wiener Akademische Philharmonie and Moscow Symphony Orchestra.

Between 1998 and 2002, Gustavo Sánchez was conductor of Coral Crevillentina, performing a large number of concerts, and Opera and Zarzuela productions. Some of them should be specially mentioned as were with world famous Opera soloist Montserrat Caballé. From 2002 until 2016, he was in charge of the Escolanía del Monasterio del Escorial, conducting countless performances within and outside Spain (Germany, Italy, USA, Panama…), both in live concert and on radio and television. He has recorded a total of seven CD's with the Escolania. He is the founding conductor of the Camerata Antonio Soler, resident orchestra of the International Conducting Masterclass “El Escorial”, along with the eminent Finnish Professor Jorma Panula. With the Camerata Antonio Soler he has performed several times at the Auditorio Nacional de Madrid, the Auditorio del Escorial and in Lisbon, at a major Musicology International Congress.

Gustavo Sánchez' vast work in historical music heritage recovery has to be mentioned as well. He has recorded four CD's with unknown symphonies, arias and “villancicos” by Gaetano Brunetti, Luigi Boccherini and Antonio Soler. This work has been internationally acknowledged as his first CD, released in December 2014, was included in the Top 10 Recent Releases by Allegro Classical magazine, and due to this mention, he was invited to conduct Brunetti’s Symphonies with University of Illinois Orchestra, in Chicago, and also at the 22nd Florida International University (FIU) Music Festival in Miami, with a program consisting of unknown works of classical repertoire, with the Camerata Antonio Soler on November 2018.

This connection with musical heritage recovery has lead Gustavo Sánchez to be part of the artistic ensemble “I virtuosi ambulanti” (based in Munich), with whom since 2014, he has enrolled in several projects of unknown Belcanto Opera from early 19th Century, with CD recordings and shows in several venues and historic theatres from Spain, Germany and Austria (the Esterházy Palace is to be highlighted), with a great success of audience and review.

Gustavo Sánchez is extremely active in music research and has published numerous articles and books. In 2009 he obtained his doctorate with European mention (cum laude) at the Universidad Autonóma de Madrid, with the thesis The music in the Escorial monastery during the period of the Hieronymite Order: Children of the Seminary (1567-1837), under the direction of Dr. Begoña Lolo. Recently his thesis received the Prize for outstanding PhD Thesis. Since 2008 he has been a Professor in the Department of Music at the Universidad Autonóma de Madrid, where he teaches and participates in several research projects.
