Alex Rosen (Bass)

Born: August 1992 - La Cañada Flintridge, California, USA

The American bass, Alexander (Alex) Rosen, obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance from The Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University (2010-2014); his Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance from Rice University (2016); and his Artist Diploma in Opera Studies, Voice and Opera from The Juilliard School (2016-2018).

After completing his studies at the Juilliard School, Alex Rosen made his international debut with Les Arts Florissants, under the direction of William Christie, in two tours of Haydn’s Creation and George Frideric Handel's Acis and Galatea. He is quickly finding a home in the concert, operatic, and song repertoire. Notable engagements include G.F. Handel's Semele with Opera Philadelphia, Haydn’s Creation with Orchestre National de Metz, and J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245 with Les Arts Florissants and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under the direction of William Christie.

In the 2019-2020 season, Alex Rosen sang Caronte in a new production of Monteverdi’s L’orfeo with the Nederlandse Reisopera, directed by Monique Wagemakers. The piece incorporated ten singers and ten dancers into one ‘organism’, fully choreographed by Nanine Linning, and featured an art installation by Dutch artist collective Studio Drift. He has appeared as Seneca in L’incoronazione di Poppea with Cincinnati Opera under the direction of Gary Thor Wedow, and with Opera Columbus under the direction of Kelly Kuo. Despite losing a number of engagements in the 2020-2021 season due to pandemic, Alex still managed to appear with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis for their ‘Opera on the Go’ project. Later, he appeared with the Des Moines Metro Opera as Citheron in a new production of Platée.

The 2022-2023 season included Seneca/Console in L'incoronazione di Poppea for the Aix-en-Provence Festival in Versailles and Palau De Les Arts Fundacio de la Comunitat in Valencia, Haydn’s Die Schöpfung for Theater Basel, Purcells The Fairy Queen for Drottningholms Slottsteater as well as a tour of G.F. Handel's Opera Alcina, HWV 34, where Alex Rosen sung the role of Melisso with Les Musiciens du Louvre under the direction of Marc Minkowski throughout Germany, Spain and Netherlands. He was also a part of a European tour of Ariodante with Il Pomo d'Oro as well as concerts of G.F. Handel's Messiah with the Orchestre Opéra Royal de Versailles with Franco Fagioli conducting.

During the 2023-2024 season, Alex Rosen joins Theatre de Caen’s tour of David et Jonathas in Lorraine, Versailles, Bordeaux and Luxembourg. He then tours with Les Arts Florissants around Japan and South Korea performing J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245. Later in the season, he has performances around Europe of G.F. Handel's Messiah with Chœur de Chambre Accentus (Director: Laurence Equilbey). He performs the role of Alidoro in La Cenerentola with Theatre du Capitole in Toulouse, after which he will join Detroit Opera for Cunning Little Vixen as Parson.

Alex Rosen also enjoys an ongoing collaboration with pianist Michał Biel, with whom he won 2nd prize in the 2018 International Hugo Wolf Academy Competition. As laureates of the Royaumont Foundation’s Art Song Academy, they have given recitals in some of Europe’s most prominent art song venues, including the Festival Lied Victoria de los Angeles in Barcelona, and Wigmore Hall in London.
