The English bass, Matthew Rose, studied at Seaford College and the Curtis Institute of Music, Philadelphia. In 2003 he joined the Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
Considered as one of the most exciting singers of his generation, Matthew Rose has performed at La Scala, Milan, Santa Fe Opera, The Royal Opera House, Covent Garden (ROH), Glyndebourne, Welsh National Opera (WNO), Houston Grand Opera, the Bayerische Staatsoper, Opéra National de Lyon, Teatro Real, Madrid, the Metropolitan Opera, New York and English National Opera (ENO).
Matthew Rose has sung most of the standard oratorio repertoire in concert, working with orchestras such as the London Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia (Rome), BBC Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra, Tonhalle Orchester Zürich, English Baroque Soloists, Dresden Staatskapelle, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Wiener Symphoniker, Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, with such conductors as Jirí Bêlohlávek, Sir Andrew Davis, Sir Colin Davis, Gustavo Dudamel, Charles Dutoit, Sir Mark Elder, Adam Fischer, Sir John Eliot Gardiner, Edward Gardner, Emmanuelle Haïm, Daniel Harding, Richard Hickox, Vladimir Jurowski Sir Charles Mackerras, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Sir Roger Norrington, Sir Antonio Pappano, David Robertson, Robin Ticciati, and Michael Tilson Thomas.
Matthew Rose has performed at the BBC Proms, Edinburgh Festival, Brighton Festival, Edinburgh Festival, Chester Festival, Cheltenham International Festival, Georges Enescu Festival and Mostly Mozart Festival in New York and has given recitals at venues such as the Wigmore Hall in London and the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam.
In 2006 Matthew Rose made an acclaimed debut at the Glyndebourne Festival as Bottom in A Midsummer Night's Dream - for which he received the John Christie Award - and he has gone on to sing the role at La Scala, at Covent Garden, the Opéra National de Lyon and at the Houston Grand Opera. Other highlights have included included Sparafucile in Rigoletto at Covent Garden; Colline La bohème at the Metropolitan Opera; W.A. Mozart’s Figaro at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich; Claggart in Billy Budd at the English National Opera and Leporello in Don Giovanni and Nick Shadow in The Rake’s Progress at the Glyndebourne Festival. Eecent engagements have included the London Symphony Orchestra with Sir Colin Davis; the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra with Gustavo Dudamel; the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra with Daniel Harding; the BBC Symphony Orchestra with Sir Andrew Davis, the Dresden Staatskapelle with Charles Mackerras and the Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia with Antonio Pappano.
In the 2012-2013 season Matthew Rose returns to the Metropolitan Opera as Talbot in a new prodction of Maria Stuarda, he makes his role debut as Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte at Covent Garden and his concert appearances include the Boston Symphony Orchestra with Dutoit, the Orchestre Révolutionnaire et Romantique with John Eliot Gardiner, the Netherlands Radio Filharmonic Orchestra with Vladimir Jurowski and the Academy of Ancient Music with Richard Egarr. Future seasons will see him sing Leporello at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin and Henry VIII in Anna Bolena for the Opéra de Bordeaux; return to Covent Garden, to the Glyndebourne Festival and to the Metropolitan Opera and make his debut at the Lyric Opera of Chicago.
Matthew Rose has recorded with Sir Colin Davis (Berlioz L'enfance du Christ, Otello and a Child of our Time for LSO Live), Sir Charles Mackerras (W.A. Mozart's Vespers and Schubert Mass in E flat with Dresden Staatskapelle) and Richard Hickox (Schubert Mass in E flat); Ariadne auf Naxos with Sir Richard Armstrong, Rossini's Stabat Mater with London Philharmonic Orchestra and Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Tristan and Isolde and William Tell with Antonio Pappano, A Midsummer Night's Dream by Benjamin Britten with Ilan Volkov from Glyndebourne, Billy Budd with Daniel Harding (winner Grammy award), Messiah with King's College Choir Cambridge (also on DVD) and a CD of Liszt songs with Iain Burnside. On DVD he can be seen in Carmen, Faust and Acis and Galatea from the Royal Opera House, Billy Budd and The Rake's Progress from Glyndebourne and Haydn's Creation with John Nelson and the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra. In 2013 he released his début solo recital disc, Schubert's Winterreise, with pianist Gary Matthewman, for Stone Records.
Matthew Rose was awarded the John Christie Prize at Glyndebourne in 2006 and received the Independent Opera/Wigmore Hall Fellowship in 2007. In June 2012 he was awarded the Critics Circle Award for Exceptional Young Talent. |
