The English soprano, Lucy Knight (née Roberts) Lucy read Music at Cambridge University, trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and completed a year on the Monteverdi Choir Apprenticeship Scheme. At Guildhall she was the recipient of scholarships from The Worshipful Company of Curriers and The Kathleen Trust, was a member of the Song Guild, and a soprano soloist for City of London Festival concerts and recitals. In 2014 she completed her training on English National Opera’s programme for young singers, entitled Opera Works. In 2013, she was awarded a full scholarship to attend the Franz-Schubert-Institute in Baden bei Wien, Austria, where she worked in master-classes with leading interpreters of the German Lied including Helmut Deutsch, Dame Ann Murray, Elly Ameling and Roger Vignoles. In 2012, she won the Philip and Dorothy Green Award for Young Concert Artists (AYCA) from Making Music, and in 2013, the International Opera Awards Foundation.
In July 2014 Lucy Knight made her debut in Germany with the role of Ninfa in Monteverdi’s L'Orfeo at the Bavarian State Opera, Munich, under Ivor Bolton. Operatic roles include Bridesmaid in Weber's Der Freischütz at the Opéra Comique, Paris and in the BBC Proms under Sir John Eliot Gardiner; Tytania in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night’s Dream in Aldeburgh; Sophie in Massenet's Werther and Yniold in Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande in the Grimeborn Festival/Bury Court Opera; Gertrude in Gould's The Withered Arm for Tête à Tête Opera Festival; Servilia in W.A. Mozart's Clemenza di Tito and Venus in Blow's Venus and Adonis for Hampstead Garden Opera; and Zerlina in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni at West Road Concert Hall, Cambridge. In 2015 she will return to the Bavarian State Opera to sing Ninfa in a revival of Monteverdi’s L'Orfeo, conducted by Christopher Moulds.
Lucy Knight's work on the concert platform has ranged from Baroque arias in ‘Queens, Heroines & Ladykillers’ in the Purcell Room (Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment), to the UK première of Sibelius: Kuolema with the English Chamber Orchestra in King’s Place. She made her Carnegie Hall/USA début in January in the USA première of Karl Jenkins's The Healer, presented by Distinguish Concerts International New York. Concert highlights include François Couperin's Quatre Versets d’un Motet (Sir John Eliot Gardiner), W.A. Mozart: Exsultate Jubilate in the City of London Weekend Festival, George Frideric Handel's Messiah, Dixit Dominus, and J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245) (Lincoln Cathedral and Handel House Museum), Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 with Charivari Agreable and Samuel Barber's Knoxville: Summer of 1915 with the de Havilland Philharmonic. She recently performed B. Britten's Les Illuminations with the Covent Garden Chamber Orchestra conducted by Graham Ross, and featured as the soprano soloist in the world première of the new Karl Jenkins work The Healer with Grayshott Concerts, which was broadcast on Classic FM. She is also a member of Monteverdi Choir (Director: John Eliot Gardiner).
A lover of Lieder and French song, Lucy Knight's recital highlights include Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch at LSO St Luke's under the direction of Graham Johnson, and his ‘Song Circles’ of Gabriel Fauré and Robert Schumann. She has appeared in diverse programmes for St Martin-in-the-Fields, Oxford Lieder Young Artist Platform, Song in the City and in song masterclasses and the contemporary ‘Voice Works’ project at the Wigmore Hall. As a Making Music Young Concert Artist she has had the pleasure of giving song recitals across UK and Northern Ireland. |
