Kathleen Radcke (Soprano)

Born: Canada

The Canadian soprano, Kathleen Radcke, holds an Opera Diploma from Wilfrid Laurier University (April 2000), where she studied with bass-baritone Daniel Lichti (1998-2000). She received a Bachelor of Music and a Performance Diploma from McMaster University (April 1998), where she studied with Élise Bédard (1995-1998). She participated in Orford Summer Arts Festival, Opera Workshop (July 2001) and Opera Lyra Ottawa Young Artists Program (2001-2002). She was a member of the Festival Choir of the European Music Festival under the direction of Helmuth Rilling, performing in Stuttgart, Bonn, Athens and Berlin (Summer 2002). She continues her studies in Ottawa with soprano Donna Brown.

Kathleen Radcke has been a finalist in several music competitions including the Brian Law Opera Scholarship (2003), Ontario Music Festival and the Canadian Music Competition (2001, 2003). Various awards include the Ottawa Choral Society Trophy, the Beatrice Keenleyside RA Civil Service Trophy, the Musical Arts Club Scholarship and the Mary Adamo Memorial Scholarship, as well as the Margaret A. Broad Award by the Ottawa Music Club.

Kathleen Radcke's Operatic roles include Helga (Gisela in her Bathtub) for the Opera Lyra Ottawa Young Artists Program and Najade (Ariadne auf Naxos) for the Orford Summer Music Festival. Other roles in her repertoire include Second Lady (Le Chien de Watteau), Minerve (Thésée), Dew Fairy in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hänsel und Gretel, Pamina and Papagena in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte. Additional oratorio repertoire includes J.S. Bach's Cantata BWV 51, St. John Passion (BWV 245) and St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244), George Frideric Handel's Solomon and Gabriel Fauré's Requiem.

Last season's (2003-2004) highlights included J.S. Bach's Cantata BWV 150 and Charpentier's Le Reniement de St. Pierre with the Ottawa Bach Choir; Haydn's Kleine Orgelmesse, W.A. Mozart's Missa Brevis in F and Schubert's Mass in G with the Canadian Centennial Choir, a solo recital at Salisbury Cathedral, England; and J.S. Bach's Cantata BWV 150 with the Theatre of Early Music in Montréal.

Upcoming performances find Kathleen Radcke in Ottawa and Sault Ste. Marie for a recital of songs for harp and voice; in Hamilton for Felix Mendelssohn's Te Deum; a New Year's Eve concert of opera highlights; and a performance for the Ponticello Recital Series in Aylmer. She will also be recording a CD of 20th century music for voice and harp this season.

Hailed for her "smooth and lovely voice," soprano Kathleen Radke is quickly establishing herself as a young artist of note. "…she's got what it takes and will doubtless be a well-known and important soprano before too many years have gone by." (Richard Todd, music critic, Ottawa Citizen)
