The English baritone, Samuel (Sam) Queen, was born and grew up in London. He went on to study English at Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, where he also sang in the college choir. He continues to study singing with Robert Dean and receives coaching from Audrey Hyland. He was then awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal Academy of Music (RAM) in London. He is currently (2014) in his second year with Royal Academy Opera, supported by the Sickle Foundation and the John Baker Opera Award. He studies with Mark Wildman and Audrey Hyland. At the Academy, he won prizes for opera, Lieder, English vocal music and English song. He is grateful to the Josephine Baker Trust for its continued support.
For Royal Academy Opera in 2012-2013 Samuel Queen sang Blazes in Peter Maxwell Davies' The Lighthouse, Le Fauteuil in Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortilèges (BBCSO/Denève) and Zaretsky/Captain in Eugene Onegin. This year (2014) he sings the King of Scotland in Ariodante and excerpts as W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni. He appeared as Mr Gedge in the Britten-Pears Young Artist production of Benjamin Britten's Albert Herring in Aldeburgh and in the world premiere of Stockhausen’s Mittwoch us Licht with Birmingham Opera Group in 2012. His other operatic roles include Schaunard, Papageno, Guglielmo, the Count and Adonis.
Samuel Queen has given numerous song recitals in wide-ranging repertoire and regularly performs as bass soloist in concerts, most recently in J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245) and St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) and Haydn's The Creation. He recently made his debut at Wigmore Hall with the Academy’s Song Circle, performing Lieder by Schubert and Robert Schumann. Other appearances include the bass solos for the RAM/Kohn Foundation Royal Academy of Music - J.S. Bach: The Cantatas. |
