The American counter-tenor, Tai Oney, holds Bachelor of Music Education degree from Stetson University; and Master of Music degree in vocal performance from Boston University. In 2012 he graduated with Diploma from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where he was the recipient of the John Moriarty Presidential Scholarship, and his main teacher was Carole Haber. He has been a prize-winner in several major competitions, including claiming a prestigious Sullivan Foundation Award, and First Place in the Sarasota Artist Series Competition. He is a Ruth West Scholar supported by a Pidem Award and Fulbright alumnus. Tai is a member of the Royal College of Music International Opera School studying under the tutelage of Russell Smythe. A Finalist in the Cesti Singing Competition, Semi-Finalist in the Palm Beach Opera Competition, and a Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
Hailed by Opera News for the “richness and pliability of his [voice],” Tai Oney made his professional opera debut with Opera Boston - in collaboration with Boston Baroque - performing the role of Athamas in George Frideric Handel’s Semele. He has been a member of the Central City Opera and a guest artist for the Palm Beach Opera young artist program.
Among his many solo appearances, Tai Oney has performed in G.F. Handel’s Messiah, Haydn’s Paukenmesse, J.S. Bach’s St. John’s Passion (BWV 245), Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, Arthur Honegger’s King David, to name a few. In the 2012-2013 season alone, he has been seen as Piero della Francesca in Seven Angels, Ottone in L'Incoronazione di Poppea, Tirinto in the London Handel Festival's production of Imeneo, and Oberon in a scenes production of Benjamin Brittens A Midsummer Night's Dream. Tai also performed as Liscione in an English translated adaptation of La Dirindina and the role of Spirit in Dido and Aeneas with the Bath International Music Festival.
Tai Oney recently covered the role of Ottone in English Touring Opera’s revival of The Coronation of Poppea and Nero in Agrippina in addition to being a soloist in the G.F. Handel’s Vespers concert. Future engagements include performing the role of Teseo in G.F. Handel’s opera seria Arianna in Creta with the London Handel Festival as well as be a featured artist at the Innsbruck Festival of Early Music in Innsbruck, Austria. |
