The English tenor (and former boy soprano), Daniel Norman, began his musical career as a chorister at Lichfield Cathedral where he made several broadcasts and recordings as a treble soloist. He was a choral scholar at New College, Oxford, where he read engineering before continuing his studies in North America at both Banff and Tanglewood. At the Britten-Pears School he studied French song with Hugues Cuénod, English song with Anthony Rolfe-Johnson and Bach with Ernst Haefliger. He currently (1998) studies with Diane Forlano and is a member of the Opera Course at the Royal Academy of Music in London.
Daniel Norman regularly appears in recital, having performed in the Holywell Music Room and New College Chapel in Oxford, Wigmore Hall, St Martin in the Fields, Leighton House, at the Southwark Festival and the Tanglewood Music Center. Solo recordings include Janacek with the New London Chamber Choir for Hyperion and a recording of lute songs with Emily van Evera.
In opera, Daniel Norman has performed many roles for New Chamber Opera including Madwoman, Tempter and Nebuchadnezzar in Benjamin Britten’s Church Parables; Janiku in Janacek's The Diary of One Who Disappeared and the Sorceress in Dido and Aeneas. He has sung with Opera Restor'd in their triple bill of Dibdin operas and as Moore in The Dragon of Wantley (including tours to Belgium and Spain). At Tanglewood he sang the Rector in Peter Grimes conducted by Seiji Ozawa and at the St Endellion Festival he sang both Pliable and Mr By-Ends in The Pilgrim's Progress with Richard Hickox. He sang the Narrator and Ahab in Cambridge Opera Group's recent staging of Alexander Goehr's Triptych and Johannes Brahms' Neues Liebesliederwalzer for the Mark Morris Dance Group.
Recent oratorio performances have included the Evangelist in J.S. Bach's St Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in Oxford, Dvorak's Stabat Mater in Stamford, Rossini's Petite Messe Solenelle in Godalming, Carmina Burana in Durham and at the Snape Proms, the arias in J.S. Bach’s St John Passion (BWV 245) at the Gregynog Festival, Mozart's Requiem in Westminster Cathedral, L.v. Beethoven's Missa Solemnis in Eton Hall and George Frideric Handel's Messiah at the Sheldonian, Oxford, and in Worcester Cathedral.
Recent engagements have included the Mayor in B. Britten's Albert Herring for the Combined Royal Colleges Opera department, J.S. Bach's St John Passion (BWV 245) with Trevor Pinnock in London and Lucerne, Mozart's C minor Mass in Truro Cathedral, a Lieder weekend with Graham Johnson as part of the KlavierFest Ruhr and Haydn's Nelson Mass with Adam Fischer. Future engagements include Messiah with the Northern Sinfonia and appearances at the Wigmore Hall. |
