Sarah M. Newman (Soprano)

Born: February 1984 - USA

The American soprano, Sarah M(ariko) Newman, is a graduate of The Juilliard School (PreCollege Graduate in Vocal Performance: 2000-2002) and the Manhattan School of Music in New York City (Bachelor of Music degree in Vocal Performance: 2002-2006). She is a scholarship recipient of the Weißenbrunn Palace Bovicelli Competition for Diminution.

With the opera at Manhattan School of Music, Sarah Newman sang in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Don Giovanni, as well as Francis Poulenc's Les Dialogues des Carmélites. She also appeared with the Lake George Opera in Floyd’s Susannah, Rossini’s La Cenerentola, and Leonard Bernstein's Candide. At the Tanglewood Festival, she sang under the baton of Robert Spano in Ravel's L’enfant et les sortilèges. She has performed the roles of Susanna and Barbarina in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, as Pamina in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, Lakmé in Delibes Lakmé, and Gretel in Engelbert Humperdinck's Hansel and Gretel, and was a part of the American premiere of Friedrich Cerha’s Four Höldern Fragments and the Avantgarde Oratorio Justine’s Red.

In 2008, Sarah Newman moved to Munich, Germany to pursue her passion for early music. Since then, she has made a name for herself as a soloist and ensemble singer. She is a sought after soloist in Germany and all over Europe. Her passion for Early Music shines through in her fresh and inspired interpretations of works such as J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion BWV 245, Weihnachts-Oratorium BWV 248, and Mass in B minor BWV 232 and Cantata und Jauchzet Gott in allen Landen BWV 51, C. Monteverdi’s Vespro della Beata Vergine, Giacomo Carissimi's Historie di Jepthe, and Dietrich Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri.; Carl Orff’s Carmina Burana, Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols, George Frideric Handel's Messias, Laudate Pueri, and Domenico Scarlatti’s Stabat Mater.

In 2013, Sarah Newman was a semi-finalist winner at the 2nd International Early Music Vocal Competition in Poznan, Poland. With the Philharmonischer Chor München, she has sung under the baton of renowned conductors such as Kent Nagano, Lorin Maazel, Kurt Masur and Paul Goodwin and has appeared as a choir soloist with Krzysztof Urbanski (Orff’s Carmina Burana at Munich’s Klassik am Odeonsplatz), Michael Sanderling (L.v. Beethoven's Chor-Fantasie), and Ton Koopman (J.S. Bach's Weihnachts-Oratorium BWV 248). She has performed at various renowned festivals such as the Festival van Flaanderen, the Landshuter Hofmusiktage, Festival Tres Culturas in Murcia, Spain, the Cork Early Music Festival in Ireland, Festival Vox et Route Romane, and Early Music Vancouver, just to name a few.

Highlights of the past year (2023): Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aneas at the State Theater in Schaffhausen (Switzerland), Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer's Concentus de Sancta Cruce and Offertorium de Dedikatione Templi at Rastatt Palace, and W.A. Mozart's Requiem at the St. Lukas Church in Munich. This season (2024), she is looking forward to performing several fantastic pieces such as G.F. Handel's Alexander’s Feast, J.S. Bach's Magnificat in D major BWV 243, John Rutter's Requiem, as well as Johannes Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem.

Sarah Newman has been a member of the renowned ensemble Estampie (September 2008-March 2020), the avant-garde electro medieval band QNTAL (since March 2012), and co-founded the internationally successful group VocaMe (March 2008-March 2020), a vocal ensemble which premiered the works of the 9th Century Byzantine nun Kassia, released a critically acclaimed album of the music of Hildegard von Bingen with Edel/Berlin Klassik. Their CD “Christine de Pizan – Chansons et Ballades” dedicated to the works of the 14th Century poet was nominated for a 2016 International Classical Music Award.

Sarah Newman was soprano soloist with Münchener Bach-Chor (June 2008); and opera singer at Tambosi Opera in Munich (April 2011-December 2016). Alongside her work as a concert soloist, she sings regularly with several renowned ensembles such as the Philharmonischer Chor München (since February 2012), Capella Cathedralis in Munich (since August 2012), St. Peter Kammerchor in Munich (since September 2012), Kammerchor Stuttgart (since July 2019; Director: Frieder Bernius), Vocalensemble Rastatt (since September 2019; Director: Holger Speck), Schola Heidelberg (since December 2019) - with whom she recorded the CD Eros und Gewalt, released this year with Genuin Records - and the medieval ensemble Per- Sonat whose CD Orpheus’ Echo was also released this year with Christophorus Records. She also was soundtrack singer for the several films, including "Hannah Arendt" (March 2012), "Die Pilgerin" (ZDF, January 2013), and the game "Das Schwarze Auge: Satinavs Ketten" (June 2012).
