Katherine Napiwotzki (Soprano)

Born: Stratford, Ontario, Canada

The Canadian soprano and singing teacher, Katherine Napiwotzki, studied at Stratford Central Secondary School (Class of 2007). She obtained her Honours Bachelor of Music degree in Voice Performance from the University of Western Ontario, studying with Gwenlynn Little (2007-2011); and her Master of Music degree in Voice Performance and Vocal Pedagogy from the University of Toronto, studying with Lorna MacDonald (2011-2013). During the summer of 2011, she studied at the Accademia Europea dell’Opera in Italy. Her Honors & Awards include: Silver Medal, Diploma Level Voice at Ontario Music Festival Association (June 2010); Marguerite L. Geiger Award at University of Western Ontario (April 2011); Silver Medal, Graduate Level Voice at NATS Ontario Chapter Auditions (November 2011); Ontario Graduate Scholarship (September 2011); Honourable Mention, Provincial Finals Competition, Open Voice at Ontario Music Festival Association (June 2012).

Katherine Napiwotzki gave her first concert performance singing Schubert’s Shepherd on the Rock in the Stratford Summer Music’s Chamber Concert Series. Her voice has been described as “tender and powerful, a dynamic combination” (Arshak Andriasov, composer). As a soprano with a passion for concert repertoire and new music, she has worked with composers Ronald Beckett, John Beckwith, Norbert Palej, and Arshak Andriasov. She enjoys exploring new languages and in 2012 she performed the Norwegian music of Edvard Grieg in An Afternoon of Nordic Song at the Richard Bradshaw Amphitheatre, along with fellow students at the University of Toronto. Operatic performances include the role of Barbarina in W.A. Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro. Other operatic performances include the role of First Lady in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte and Suor Valentine in Francis Poulenc's Les Dialogues des Carmélites. Recent performances include Johann Adolf Hasse's Laudate Pueri with Cantores Celestes Women’s Choir, the World Premiere of Andriasov’s Russian Romances at the Toronto Andriasov Music Festival, and solo performances with Arcady. She is currently a full-time soprano with the Elora Festival Singers.

As a teacher, Katherine Napiwotzki enjoys teaching both beginner and advanced vocal students. She taught for a year at Music Fundamentals in Mississauga (September 2012-April 2013) and was secretary for the Student Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing at the University of Toronto (September 2012-April 2013). Currently, she is a board member of Music and Opera Appreciation, an exciting educational series in Stratford, Ontario. Since 2013, she is part-time vocal instructor at Tyndale University College in Toronto.
