The American baritone and conductor, Brian Mummert, obtained his Bachelor of Arts in Music from Yale University (2005-2009), where he served as the musical director of the Whiffenpoofs, America’s oldest collegiate a cappella group, for their Centennial year; and his Master of Music in Voice at the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with William Sharp and received the George Castelle Memorial Award in Voice. He recently completed a second Master of Music degree with Distinction in Choral Studies at the University of Cambridge, Trinity College (2016-2017), where he studied with several major British conductors including Stephen Layton, Timothy Brown, and Geoffrey Webber.
A charismatic and versatile musician, baritone & conductor Brian Mummert adapts easily to a wide variety of musical genres and eras. He has appeared as a soloist at the American Bach Soloists and Tafelmusik Summer Festivals, with the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall, singing music of Ralph Vaughan Williams and Schubert with the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra, and as a Colburn Fellow at SongFest, and has directed a variety of vocal ensembles in venues spanning six continents, including American Prize-winning ensemble The New Consort.
Brian Mummert's operatic roles include Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas, Bob in The Old Maid and the Thief, Mother in Kurt Weill’s Die Sieben Todsünden, Demetrius in Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream, and Apollo in both Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo and Charpentier's Orphée, in addition to a broad oratorio & concert repertoire ranging from Dietrich Buxtehude's Membra Jesu Nostri to Arvo Pärt's PASSIO. His ensemble affiliations as a singer include performances in the inaugural concert of the Yale Choral Artists under William Christie, with the Santa Fe Desert Chorale, the New York Choral Artists, and The Thirteen, and at Bard Summerscape in the New York stage premiere of Strauss’ Die Liebe der Danae. He can be heard on recordings including "Sing Out, Mr. President" under Judith Clurman for NPR and Sono Luminus, Echo Bloom’s "Blue", and recent releases of The Thirteen, the Sanctuary Choir of Marble Collegiate Church in NYC, and the Choir of the Basilica of the National Shrine in DC.
Brian Mummert is the founder and musical director of The New Consort (since 2015), a professional solo-voice ensemble dedicated to the juxtaposition of music from diverse composers and repertoires and winners of the 2015 American Prize in Chamber Music. In addition to concerts across the East Coast and the UK, the ensemble will be recording the music of the Dow Partbooks for anticipated release next fall. He has served as the Graduate Assistant Conductor to both the Choir of Gonville & Caius College Cambridge under Geoffrey Webber and the Cambridge University Chamber Choir with Timothy Brown. Additional experience ranges from working as chorus-master for Stinney, Frances Pollock's award-winning new opera, to his time as an associate conductor (in addition to soloist & cantor) of the Choir of Christ Church New Haven. He is also Co-Founder of ChamberQUEER (since February 2019) and Music Director of Ars Musica Chorale (since August 2019). He looks forward to beginning his tenure as the Assistant Conductor of The Thirteen starting this fall. He currently lives in Brooklyn, New York. |
