The German conductor, Rainer Mühlbach, studied at the University of Dresden piano and conducting. In 1988 he received a grant from the Schleswig–Holstein Festival, which enabled him to work as Assistant to Leonard Bernstein in Berlin, Munich, Vienna and London.
After first engagements at the Semperoper Dresden, the Basle Theatre and the Hamburg State Opera, Rainer Mühlbach became Principle Conductor at the Bremen Opera (from 1995 to 2000) and from 2004 to 2007, he was the music director of the Muenster Opera where he has been in charge of a large number of concerts and the new productions of Lohengrin and Moniuszko's Halka, Otello, W.A. Mozart's La Clemenza di Tito, Tannhäuser, L’enfant et Les Sortileges, L.v. Beethoven's Fidelio and W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni.
Mühlbach has been invited to many important European opera houses. He has a close relationship to the Semperoper Dresden where he a.o. conducted W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, W.A. Mozart's Cosi Fan Tutte, W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Fidelio, Die Csardasfürstin (Stage director: Peter Konwitschny), L' Italiana In Algeri, and George Frideric Handel's Alcina, as well as some ballet productions.
At the Cologne Opera where Rainer Mühlbach is the director of the International Opera Studio he conducted f.e. Zauberflöte, Entführung Aus Dem Serail, Don Giovanni, La Cenerentola and a new-production of Francis Poulenc's Les Dialogues des Carmelites. Future productions there include Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire and Offenbach’s Les Contes D’hoffmann.
Rainer Mühlbach has been invited to the Basle Theatre, the Graz Opera, the Nationaltheatre Weimar, the Aalto theatre Essen, the Opéra de Paris, the Hannover State Opera and the Grand théâtre de Genève. At the Deutsche Oper am Rhein he was responsible for a large variety of performances and revivals.
With the Hamburg Ballet (Hamburg State Opera) Rainer Mühlbach made new productions of Bernstein Dances and Nijinskij (Choreography: John Neumeier) with performances at the Baden-Baden Festival, the Opéra de Paris, Copenhagen, at the Lincoln Centre, New York, in Washington and Madrid.
On the concert podium Rainer Mühlbach has been invited to the Dresden Staatskapelle, Dresdner Philharmonie, SWF Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden, Bayerischer Rundfunk Symphonieorchester, Orquesta Sinfónica de Madrid, Royal Danish Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra (Washington), NDR Sinfonieorchester Hamburg and Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. He was invited to the Carinthian Summer Festival, Schleswig-Holstein Festival, Hamburg Music Festival, European Festival in Stuttgart, Oregon Bach Festival in Eugene, Oregon and to the Royal Albert Hall London. In Munich he conducted the finals of the ARD Competition in 2001. |
