Jana Miller (Soprano)

Born: Truro, Nova Scotia, Canada

The Canadian soprano, Jana Miller, studied at McGill University, the University of Toronto, and the Banff Centre. She has received generous support from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et lettres du Québec, and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and was a 2015 recipient of the Jacqueline Desmarais Foundation Grants for Young Canadian Opera Singers. She has studied as a Stern Fellow at Songfest in Los Angeles (2013), and as the 2011 winner of the Austrian Society of Montreal scholarship, was able to study poetry and German Llieder with the reknowned masters such as Elly Ameling, Roger Vignoles, Barbara Bonney, and Julius Drake at the Franz Schubert Institut in Baden-bei-Wien, Austria. In June 2014, she was awarded First Prize in singing in the Prix d’Europe Competition, as well as the prestigious John Newmark Prize. She has also been a silver medalist at both the Concours de Musique Hélène Roberge and Eckhardt-Grammaté Contemporary Music Competition.

Jana Miller is notably taking her place in an upcoming generation of classical artists. In December 2013, she was a featured soloist at Carnegie Hall, singing George Frideric Handel’s Messiah with the Masterwork Chorus and Orchestra. Showing a natural affinity for interpretations of G.F. Handel and W.A. Mozart, her operatic roles have included Susanna in W.A. Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Despina in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, Zerlina in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Semele in G.F. Handel's Semele, Morgana in G.F. Handel's Alcina and Poppea in G.F. Handel's Agrippina.

Jana Miller is an accomplished singer of oratorio, particularly as a J.S. Bach soloist. She debuted at the Carmel Bach Festival (Carmel, California) during July 2015 after being selected as a Virginia Best Adams fellow. Her 2015-2016 season included a debut with the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra as the soprano soloist in J.S. Bach's Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), as well as a performance of J.S. Bach's Easter Oratorio (BWV 249) with Ensemble Caprice.

Jana Miller has been committed to the performance of contemporary music and Lieder and enjoys creating and performing recitals and incorporating works by Canadian composers whenever possible. She has been featured in a worldwide broadcast of an all-Canadian concert in Rome, Italy, singing works by both Schubert and Canadian composer Colin Eatock.

Jana Miller has been engaged as a soloist by orchestras and organizations across Canada and the USA, such as Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Symphony Nova Scotia, Carmel Bach Festival, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, Ballet Opera Pantomime, Masterwork Chorus, Elora Festival Singers, Spiritus Chamber Choir, The Church of St. Andrew and St. Paul, Barachois Festival, Theatre of Early Music (Director: Daniel Taylor), Jeunesses Musicales of Canada, Société d’art Vocal de Montréal, McGill Chamber Orchestra, and Ensemble Caprice (Director: Matthias Maute). She is now based in Berlin, Germany.
