The German tenor, Norbert Meyn, studied singing in Dresden, Riga and Weimar and at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (from 1997). In 1996 he was a prize-winner at the Baroque Singing Competition of the International Handel-Festival in Halle, and in 1998 he won first prize at the English Singers and Speakers Competition in London.
Norbert Meyn is equally at home singing Baroque, classical and contemporary music. As a concert soloist he he has appeared at the Barbican Hall, the South Bank Centre, St. John’s Smith Square and the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Usher Hall in Edinburgh, the Halle International Handel Festival, the Utrecht Festival of Early Music, with conductors including Sir Roger Norrington, Howard Arman, Simon Halsey, Philip Pickett and Sir John Eliot Gardiner.. He has performed J.S. Bach's B-Minor Mass (BWV 232) in with Philip Pickett in Madrid, J.S. Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) and Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248) with with the Salzburg Bach Choir and Howard Arman in Salzburg and J.S. Bach's Cantata Solos with the Monteverdi Choir and Orchestra conducted by Sir John Eliot Gardiner as part of the Bach Cantata Pilgrimage in Luxemburg. In 2000 he sang the tenor solo in Weill's Berliner Requiem with European Voices and BCMG under Thomas Adés at the Aldeburgh Festival and the Proms. He also appeared as Evangelist in the St. John Passion (BWV 245) at St. John’s Smith Square in London and at Chester Cathedral.
Norbert Meyn was a soloist in the "Masquerade" Series of Early English Opera at the South Bank Centre. Other operatic appearances include the title-role in The Martyrdom of St. Magnus by Peter Maxwell Davies with The Opera Group in London and at the Buxton Festival, Almaviva in The Barber of Seville, Monostatos in The Magic Flute and Danilo in The Merry Widow for Pavilion Opera as well as an Apprentice in Graham Vick's production of Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg at the Royal Opera House. Selected operatic roles are: Tamino in W.A. Mozart's Die Zauberflöte), Don Ottavio in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Almaviva in Rossini's Il Barbiere di Sevilla, Podesta in W.A. Mozart's La Finta Giadiniera, Don Giovanni (Gazzaniga, title role), Damon in George Frideric Handel's Acis and Galathea, Magnus in Peter Maxwell-Davies's The Martyrdom of St. Magnus and Abaris in Rameau's Les Boreades. He also sang the role of Bernardo in a feature film of the Goethe-Singspiel Erwin und Elmire (Anna Amalia) by Michael Dominski (ZDF Theaterkanal 2010).
As a Lieder singer Norbert Meyn performed Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin at Conway Hall and Winterreise at the Bloomsbury Theatre in London. He was also a participant of the Steans Institute for Young Artists Programme at the Ravinia Festival in Chicago. Together with pianist Christopher Gould he created the recital series “Packed Lunch” at the Bloomsbury Theatre.
CD recordings include J.S. Bach's cantatas for Soli Deo Gloria, Engel Lund’s Book of Folk Songs for Nimbus Records and Schubert Lieder with Eugene Asti for SFZ Music. He has also performed, toured and recorded extensively with ensembles like the New London Consort, European Voices, Le Concert d'Astrée, Choir of the Enlightenment, London Voices and Trinity Baroque.
Since 2001 Norbert Meyn has been Professor at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, where he teaches German Diction and Lieder Classes; , and since 2005 also at the Royal College of Music, where he teaches German Lieder classes. As a Language Coach he has worked with conductors such as James Conlon, Sir Roger Norrington and Sir Simon Rattle. He recently published a DVD documentary on Acting and the Art of Classical Song. He lives in London with his wife and daughter.
