The German tenor, Hugo Meyer-Welfing, worked as a taxi driver. After his voice had been dicovered coincidentally, he was trained at the Conservatory of Hannover.
Hugo Meyer-Welfing made his debut in 1928 at the State Theatre of Osnabrück. After the State Theatre of Aachen, he came in 1938 to the State Theatre of Königsberg (East Prussia), where he remained until 1940. From 1943 he was engaged by the State Theatre of Stettin, in 1943 in Vienna Volksoper, and since 1945 he was a member of the Vienna State Opera. He belonged to the singers, who were considerably involved in the glossful Viennese postwar performances of the operas by W.A. Mozart. His great roles included Don Ottavio in W.A. Mozart's Don Giovanni, Hoffmann in Hoffmanns Erzählungen, but he also performed smaller roles. He appeared in more theatres and was an outstanding concert and oratorio singer.
Since 1956 Hugo Meyer-Welfing was a Professor at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna.
