Ulrich Messthaler (Bass)

Born: 1959 - Germany

The German bass, Ulrich Messthaler, studied first painting and philosophy in Munich, afterwards singing in Basel and New York. Among his teachers were Kurt Widmer, Thomas LoMonaco, Denis Hall and Maria Sandulescu.

Already during his studies, Ulrich Messthaler made himself a name as Lieder interpreter and a Baroque singer. Soon followed engagements to international festivals such as Paris, Lyon, Aries, Amiens, Munich, Stuttgart, Rastatt, Urach and Milan. He has co-operated with numerous important conductors such as Armin Jordan, Joshua Rifkin, Anthony Roo1ey, Frieder Bernius, Louis Devos, René Jacobs or Jordi Savall. Since 1987 he has appeared regularly at the Stadttheater Basel.

Ulrich Messthaler has participated in recordings of works of Heinrich Schütz, Dietrich Buxtehude, Mazzochi, Carissimi, J.S. Bach, George Frideric Handel and Grondi, some of which were distinguished with various international record prizes.

Since 1989 Ulrich Messthaler is a teacher for singing at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.
