The harpsichordist and musicologist, Orhan Memed, studied piano and violin studies in the USA at the University of Southern California, and obtained a doctorate in musicology at the University of Oxford. In 1992 he moved to Paris in to study with Huguette Dreyfus where he was awarded the Médaille d’or à l’unanimité avec félicitations du jury and the Prix d’Excellence.
Orhan Memed lives in Paris and has performed throughout Europe. While beginning a performing career in the early 1990’s, he was named editor then managing director at Éditions de l’Oiseau-Lyre. His published research encompasses early English keyboard music, 18th-century French vocal music and Macedonian folk music. He has taught courses on the history of music and the history of opera for the Vassar College-Wesleyan University Programme in Paris since 1998. In 1999 he was named Artistic Director of the Académie musicale de Villecroze in the south of France where he directed and organised master-classes, composition workshops and musicological colloquia over the last ten years.
Orhan Memed is the producer and co-author of several documentary films on artists such as Christa Ludwig, Hugues Cuénod, Betsy Jolas, Keiko Abe and Jessye Norman. He can be heard in the documentary film Quand l’Europe parlait français in works of Rameau, François Couperin and J.S. Bach.
Orhan Memed recorded J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations (BWV 988) in 2006 and the Partitas in 2011. |
