Joy Elizabeth Meade (Choral Conductor)

Born: Unionville, Pennsylvania, USA

The American choral conductor and music pedagogue, Joy Elizabeth Meade, obtained her Bachelor of Arts degree in Voice Performance and French from University of Richmond; her Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, where she had the opportunity to sing under the batons of the finest maestros in the world; and her Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from University of Georgia in Atlanta with Dr. Daniel Bara.

Prior to earning her doctorate in conducting at the University of Georgia, Joy Elizabeth Meade taught middle and high school choir and orchestra for the Unionville-Chadds Ford School District in Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, was the assistant conductor of the Brandywine Valley Chorale, and has been a guest clinician with church, school and community choirs on the East coast. During her doctoral studies at the University of Georgia, She served as the assistant conductor of the Hodgson Singers and University Chorus, conducting performances of Haydn’s Creation and Igor Stravinsky’s Mass and helping prepare Georges Bizet’s Carmen, George Frideric Handel’s Messiah and Requiems by Johannes Brahms and Herbert Howells. Her research culminated in a dissertation on pilgrimage and postminimalism in Joby Talbot’s 2005 choral work, Path of Miracles.

After her studies, Joy Elizabeth Meade was the Associate Director of Choirs at Georgia State University’s School of Music (August 2016-June 2018), where she conducted Choral Union and teaches conducting, choral music education and choral literature courses. There, she was the recipient of the 2018 Center for International and Collaborative Arts grant and also started a permanent collaboration and graduate assistant opportunity between Georgia State's choral department and the Atlanta Homeward Choir.

Since July 2018, Joy Elizabeth Meade is the Director of Choral Activities and an Assistant Professor of Music at Messiah College (since July 2018), where she conducts Concert Choir, Messiah University Chamber Singers and Choral Arts Society. These choirs tour nationally and internationally and perform regularly on campus, in the community and collaborate with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra. She also teaches undergraduate and graduate choral conducting at Messiah, as well as applied voice.

In addition to conducting, Joy Elizabeth Meade has pursued professional singing opportunities as a member of Westminster Choir College’s Westminster Symphonic Choir, Westminster Choir and Westminster Kantorei; the Spoleto Festival opera chorus; and Cantatica. She continues to perform regularly as a professional choral singer and soloist, as well as serve as a clinician and adjudicator at high schools, universities and festivals on the East Coast.
