The Swedish baritone, Peter Mattei, studied music in Stockholm.
Peter Mattei began his musical career in 1990 in an opera by Mozart, La finta giardiniera, and two years later he sang in Falstaff by Salieri. During 1994-1995 season, he made his first Figaro in Nozze di Figaro at the Royal Opera of Stockholm and his first Don Giovanni in Gothenburg Opera House. With the autumn 1995, he appeared for the first time at the Scottish Opera, where he sang Don Giovanni, for which he was highly acclaimed by by the British press. He reproduced this extreme success in the same place with his first Guglielmo in Così fan tutte. In 1996-1997 season, he sang Don Fernando in Fidelio by L.v. Beethoven under the batton of Sir George Solti at the Festival of Salzburg; with Claudio Abbado and the Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin, he sang the bass soloist in Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244). In addition, the Royal Opera of Stockholm engaged him in roles like Papageno in Die Zauberflöte and Lionel in Jeanne d'Arc by Tchaïkovsky. The Theatre of La Monnaie in Brussels invited him to perform Harlekin in Ariadne auf Naxos by Richard Strauss. He is frequently requested to appear in recitals: the Lyric Symphony by of Zemlinsky, the Lieder eines Fahrenden Gesellen and Knaben Wunderhorn by Gustav Mahler (Philharmonic Orchestra of Berlin, Claudio Abbado). Last year he recorded Kullervo by Sibelius with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra as well as a CD devoted to Stenhammar.
Among Peter Mattei's projects for 1999-2000 season appeared two important roles: Barber in Il Barbiere di Siviglia by Rossini at Opérade Gothenburg and the title role in Eugene Onegin by Tchaïkovski at La Monnaie. He also sang in J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) with San Francisco Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Herbert Blomstedt and in Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) under the batton of Riccardo Chailly in Milan and Amsterdam. He sang the Count in Nozze di Figaro at the Festival of Salzburg in 2001 and made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in the same role in 2002. |
