The Brazilian choral conductor and music pedagogue, Iara Regina Fricke Mate, obtained her Bachelor of Music degree in conducting from Universidade Estadual de Campinas, UNICAMP, Brasil (1987-1993); her Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Minnesota (1994-1996); her Doctor of Music degree from Indiana University in Bloomington under the guidance of Massimo Ossi (2004-2009, CAPES scholarship; Dissertation: Choral Sonorities In Sacred Music: Vocal Colors and Practices in Italy from Late-16th to Early-17th Century); with Post-Doctorate from the Univeristy of Southern California (2017).
Iara Fricke Mate acted as coordinator of the Choral Music Program at UFMG (1998-2013), Fermata Series (2010-2016), of which she was the founder. She was artistic coordinator of the II and III Semana de Música Antiga (Week of Ancient Music) at UFMG (2009 and 2011) and general coordinator of the IV edition of the event (2013). She participated in the Music Project at the Escola da Secretaria Estadual de Educação de Minas Gerais (1997-1999), and as a conducting teacher in several Brazilian music festivals. She served as coordinator of the conducting area of the Escola de Música da UFMG (1998-2002 and 2012-2017) and coordinator of the Specialization Course in Choir Conducting (1999-2003), of which she was the founder. At UFMG, she conducted the Coro de Câmara da Escola de Música da UFMG, the Orquestra Sinfônica da UFMG and the Coral de Trombones.
Iara Fricke Mate served as a member of the Ars Nova-Coral reactivation committee at UFMG (2012) and as its Principal Conductor and Artistic Director (2013-2017). She is an Associate Professor at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais and acts as a choral and orchestral conductor. She took over the direction and coordination of the Orquestra Sinfônica da Escola de Música da UFMG in January 2019. She is the founder and coordinator of the Jornada Concertistas and Pauta e da Academia de Regência da OSUFMG. She is the founder and principal conductor of the Concentus Musicum de Belo Horizonte: Coro Sinfônico, Orquestra Barroca e Madrigal (since 2016). |
