The Estonian guitarist, Heiki Mätlik, studied classical guitar from 1975 yo 1979 under Igor Klimenkov in Tallinn at the Georg Ots School of Music and later under Juri Judin in Moscow. He augmented his studies in master-classes by David Russell, Angelo Gilardino and Professor Jose Luis Rodrigo at the Madrid Conservatoire.
As a soloist and chamber musician Heiki Mätlik has performed in the Nordic countries, Baltic countries, Russia, as well as in Nordic and other European countries (Germany, Belgium, Italy), and in Australia, the USA, Canada, and Syria and Australia, working together with numerous renowned Estonian and foreign singers, instrumentalists and conductors. In the years 1978-1996 he worked closely with the internationally known Camerata Tallinn ensemble.
Heiki Mätlik has made over 30 CD and 9 DVD recordings, including the complete lute music by J.S. Bach. His recordings have been released by Finlandia Records, Harmonia Mundi (USA); Warner Music Company; Antes (Germany); Forte (Estonia); and Alba Records (Finland). He has also performed in Russian, Finnish, German and Australian TV & radio live broadcasts.
Heiki Mätlik teaches at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre. He has also given master-classes abroad, in Finland, Sweden and Germany. He is also author of several books about how to learn to play guitar. He has held many lectures about guitar history and playing techniques. Between 1990-1993 he led popular programs on the history of guitar music in Estonian Radio. He has inspired many Estonian and foreign composers to write music for guitar (Ester Mägi, Erkki-Sven Tüür, Lepo Sumera, Kuldar Sink, René Eespere, Peeter Vähi, Raimo Kangro, Nikita Koshkin etc.). |
