The Indian-born American soprano, Gitanjali Mathur, was born in India, and immigrated to the USA at the age of 8. completed her higher studies in voice performance at Indiana University, Bloomington (Bachelor of Music degree, Master of Music degree, Performer Diploma in Voice Performance: 1994-2002), along with minors in mathematics and computer science.
After her studies, Gitanjali Mathur moved to Austin, Texas where she is a full-time member of Conspirare (since September 2002) and on several of their Grammy®-nominated recordings conducted by Craig Hella Johnson. She is part of the eclectic group Convergence (winner of the Austin Critics’ Table Awards Best Ensemble Category 2013) and the early music groups Ensemble viii and Texas Early Music Project (since September 2002), all based out of Austin. In May 2009, 2010, and 2013 she had the honor of being nominated in the Best Singer category for the Austin Critics’ Table Awards. She also sings soprano in Vox Humana in Dallas (Director: David Childs; since 2009).
Gitanjali Mathur is hailed as having “skyrocketing coloratura” (South Florida Classical Review), a “fluid voice… impressive dexterity” (The Austin Chronicle), a ”piercingly clear soprano” (Austin360.com) and as being a “natural and convincing comedic actress” (Austin360.com). She has performed in France, Italy, Germany, and Denmark as a soloist and a chorister. She sings and records regularly with Seraphic Fire (since December 2008) and is featured on their Grammy®-nominated CD "A Seraphic Fire Christmas". Recently, she has sung the role of Serpina in Giovanni Battista Pergolesi’s La Serva Padrona, the role of Gabriel in J. Haydn's The Creation, W.A. Mozart's Exsultate, Jubilate, the role of the Witch in Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, has made her solo Carnegie Hall debut with Helmuth Rilling in J.S. Bach’s St. Matthew Passion (BWV 244) in January 2007, and has sung in the Oregon Bach Festival (May 2005-July 2013) and Santa Fe Desert Chorale (May 2004-2011). In the 2013-2014 season she was honored to sing the solos for George Frideric Handel’s Messiah with the Austin Symphony Orchestra and to perform the role of Venus in John Blow’s delightful Baroque opera Venus and Adonis with the Austin Vocal Arts Ensemble. She will be debuting with the Tucson Chamber Artists this season.
Most recently, Gitanjali Mathus has sung solos for J. Haydn's Lord Nelson Mass, W.A. Mozart’s Requiem, Waisenhausmesse; J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio (BWV 248), and Despina in W.A. Mozart's Cosi fan tutte in Rome, Italy at the Rome Festival. She has sung in numerous festivals as a soloist and chorister including the Austin Chamber Music Festival, Oregon Bach Festival with Helmuth Rilling, the Victoria Bach Festival with Craig Hella Johnson, The Texas Toot with Daniel Johnson and the Amherst Early Music Festival with Andrew Lawrence-King. She was also thrilled to perform in a solo recital with the Belgium based “Flander’s Recorder Quartet”. She recently started performing in the eclectic organization “Viola By Choice” run by Aurelien Péttilot. She has been the section leader in the Parish Choir at St. David’s Episcopal Church, conducted by David Stevens, since 2002.
Gitanjali Mathur has worked as Private Voice Lesson Teacher at McNeil High School (January 2004-May 2008); and Voice Instructor at Westlake High School (September 2008-May 2010). Currently, she teaches voice lessons privately at her home in Austin. |
