Julien Marine (Counter-tenor)

Born: Le Fort-De-France, Martinique

The Martinican counter-tenor, Julien Marine, grew up in Martinique where he began not only music but also the history of the Arts under the impulse of Ghislaine Bellance (then music teacher at the Lycée de Bellevue). He was attracted by cultural mediation and joined CELSA. He then moved to musicology and obtained his Master degree in Musicology, Ethnomusicology and Music Administration from Université d'Evry (2001-2005). He won his lyrical art award at the Conservatoire à Rayonnement Départemental (CRD) de Pantin (2009-2013). He perfected his vocal technique with vocal teachers such as Mickael Mardayer, Florence Schiffer and Guillemette Laurens.

Since 2001, Julien Marine is an independent vocalist, counter-tenor and performer. He has sung under conductors as Christoph Eschenbach (The Resurrection by Gustav Mahler at Salle Pleyel), Michel Laplénie (Fairy Queen by Purcell at Festival du Périgord Noir)… His taste for dance led him to collaborate with choreographers such as Chantal Loial, Christina Towle, Andreya Ouamba... From 2009 to 2015, he mixed lyrical art with the repertoire of the Caribbean in collaboration with the company Difé Kako, reinterpreting mazurkas, biguines, salsas...

Baroque music has played an important role in his repertoire. Julien Marine was one of the characters in the choreographic piece Orphée by José Montalvo and Dominique Hervieu (September 2011-June 2012). He joined Le Concert d'Astrée for the production of George Frideric Handel's Giulio Cesare in Egitto at Palais Garnier, conducted by Emmanuelle Haïm, in 2012-2013 season; and sang with them also in their production of Rameau's Castor et Pollux staged by Barrie Kosky at Opéra de Lille and Opéra de Dijon, in 2013-2014 season. Recently, he has been soloist in J.S. Bach's Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) under the baton of Béatrice Malleret and Jean-Marie Puissant in Reims and Ile de France. His transdisciplinary artistic career has brought him from the Caribbean, to Europe (Germany, Italy and many French stages), the Middle East, Russia... He currently lives in Paris, France.
