The Belgian bass, choral conductor and organist, Arnout Malfliet, trained as theologian, philosopher and harpsichord builder, and was already fascinated by music from childhood. He studied flute, piano and organ at the Muziekacademie of Halle and won the government medal for flute. He continued his organ studies in Passau where he studied at the largest church organ in the world. The passion for singing got him at a very young age in the Kerkkoor van Dworp. The Leuvens Universitair Koor only made this 'contamination' worse.
His a deep bass has led Arnout Malfliet to participate in ensembles such as Currende and Victoriaconsort (Director: Erik Van Nevel), Graindelavoix (Director: Björn Schmelzer), Laudantes (Director: Guy Janssens), Vlaams Radio Koor (Directors: Johan Duijck, Hervé Niquet, etc.), Ex Tempore (Director: Florian Heyerick), Studium Chorale (Director: Hans Leenders).... He is also a member of Ensemble BachPlus (Director: Bart Naessens).
Arnout Malfliet has as a soloist a predilection for early music (eg cantatas and the Passions of J.S. Bach). However, his repertoirey also includes works from later style periods. He could be heard as a soloist in the series "A history of the requiem"; a project by Guy Janssens and his Laudantes Consort including the Requiem by Michael Haydn and by Anton Bruckner. He regularly co-operates with various CD recordings and sings at home and abroad.
Besides being a singer, composer and organist Arnout Malfliet is also conductor. He has been the regular choir director of the vocal ensemble OrSeCante from Leuven for more than 20 years and is regularly invited as a guest conductor. When choosing projects, he tries to find a thematic unit, usually with a religious dimension. With OrSeCante he put a number of major projects on stage, including Mariavespers by C. Monteverdi, Messiah by George Frideric Handel, Johannes-Passion (BWV 245) by J.S. Bach, Te Deum by M.A. Charpentier, ... His predilection goes out to the lesser-known polyphonic work from the 16th and 17th century. He also provided his assistance to the large series of polyphonists who were published by the Davidsfonds. He is also the organist at the Filosofenfontein Dominican chapel. He also has his own ensemble, Vocem Flentium, established in 2014, a professional vocal ensemble dedicated to a rich Franco-Flemish polyphone tradition. |
