Maria Magdalena kammarkör (= MMKK; Maria Magdalena Chamber Choir) consists of about 35 singers with a high level of musical ambition. The choir is directed by Mats Nilsson, one of Sweden's foremost conductors. The choir was started in 1995 under the name Maria Magdalena motettkör. Since 2009, the choir is directed by Mats Nilsson and the choir then got its current name.
The choir belongs to Maria Magdalena församling (Maria Magdalena parish) of Södermalm in Stockholm where it contributes with choir singing at services and gives several concerts annually with or without orchestra. Every year, the choir makes two major productions with orchestras such as the Svenska Barockorkestern (Swedish Baroque Orchestra) and ensembles from the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. In addition, they do a number of a cappella concerts and a very appreciated and well-attended Christmas concert.
The choir also performs outside the parish and makes annual concert trips, both within Sweden and abroad. Paris, Malmö, Copenhagen and England have been some of the destinations. In the spring of 2018, the choir toured in Poland, with concerts in Kraków, Świdnica and Wrocław. Together with the pianist Bengt Forsberg, they made a a tour to Umeå, Örnsköldsvik and Söderhamn in the spring of 2019.
In 2015, the choir recorded their latest album "Rosa Mystica, Musik för själen" (Rosa Mystica, Music for the soul). A collection of songs consisting mainly of contemporary Scandinavian but also music by Purcell, Josef Rheinberger and Stanford. Under its old name, the choir previously recorded four records, all records are for sale. Several recordings for Swedish Radio P2 have also been made, most recently Igor Stravinsky's Psalm Symphony. |
Maria Magdalena Vokalensemble (MMVE; Maria Magdalena Vocal Ensemble) is a young ensemble that likes to collaborate with Baroque ensembles but also sings a cappella, especially the renaissance and newer music. The members are between 20 and 30 years old and many are studying or have previously studied music at, among others, Kungliga Musikhögskolan (Royal College of Music) in Stockholm. The ensemble works project-wise before music worship services and concerts and has a high level of musical ambition.
