The American choral conductor, baritone, composer and music pedagogue, studied at Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts (Class of 2004). He obtained his Bachelor of Music degree in Music Composition from New England Conservatory in Boston (Class of 2008); and his Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting Studied from Boyer College of Music and Dance - Temple University in Philadelphia (2012-2014). He has studied composition with Michael Gandolfi and Scott Wheeler, and conducting with Paul Rardin, Charles Peltz, and Hugh Wolff. He has participated in conducting master-classes sponsored by the American Choral Director’s Association, Chorus America, and the Oregon Bach Festival with Simon Halsey, Helmuth Rilling, and Robert Spano.
Nathan Lofton enjoys an active career as a conductor, composer, singer, educator, and administrator. He has seved as Music Director of the Boston New Music Initiative (June 2011-July 2012), on the music staffs of the Tanglewood Music Center and the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia (September 2016-June 2017); and on the faculty of Widener University (August 2017-May 2019). At present, he is on the Adjunct Faculty at Boyer College of Music and Dance - Temple University (since August 2019); the Artistic and Production Manager for the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia (since April 2018)), a member of the music staff at Opera Philadelphia (since August 2017), and regularly conducts the Chestnut Street Singers, a Philadelphia-based collaborative chamber choir. Recent guest conducting engagements include a program of contemporary one-act operas at the Longy School of Music of Bard College and preparing the Mendelssohn Club Chorus of Philadelphia for an appearance with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Mann Center.
Nathan Lofton's arrangements have been performed by the Boston Modern Orchestra Project, the United States Navy Band, and members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony Orchestra, and Houston Symphony Orchestra. Recent commissions have included arrangements for the Temple University Theater Department, Philadelphia Mural Arts, and the Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia.
Also a professional choral singer, Nathan Lofton is a staff singer at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Rosemont Philadelphia (since September 2016), and has performed with the Philadelphia Singers, the Philadelphia Symphonic Choir, and the Opera Philadelphia Chorus. A former member of the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, he has performed with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Boston Pops Orchestra on many occasions, including appearances at Carnegie Hall, the Lucerne and BBC Proms Festivals, and on PBS’s Great Performances.
Currently, Nathan Lofton lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with his fiancée, Diana Wensley. In their free time they enjoy cooking, exploring Philadelphia on foot, and plotting their next visit to New England. |
