Camerata Lipsiensis (Instrumental Ensemble)

Founded: Leipzig, Saxony, Germany

The Camerata Lipsiensis was formed by students at the Felix Mendelssohn University of Music and Theatre in Leipzig under the leadership of David Timm, now music director at Leipzig University. The young musicians soon discovered their love of J.S. Bach and Felix Mendelssohn and their pleasure in performing and disseminating this music as a group. The ensemble’s founders described its goal in 1992 as being the continuation of Leipzig's centuries-old musical tradition. Over the years the performance of classical works has become a permanent fixture in the orchestra’s repertoire.

Since then the members of Camerata Lipsiensis have assumed leading positions in such renowned ensembles as the MDR Sinfonieorchester Leipzig and the Staatskapelle Halle. It has given many concerts at J.S. Bach's and F. Mendelssohn’s places of activity, including the Thomaskirche, Musikhochschule and Gewandhaus in Leipzig. Especially worthy of note is its longstanding collaboration with the Leipzig Vocal Consort and the GewandhausChor under Gregor Meyer, as reflected in their double CD with Ferdinand Hiller’s oratorio Die Zerstörung Jerusalems (2012).
