Andrew Lipian (Counter-tenor)

Born: 1987 - Grafton, Ohio, USA

The American counter-tenor and composer, Andrew Charles-Glass Lipian, began his career in music in England at the age of 13 - where he was identified as a counter-tenor by Marc Wildman, then-Head of Vocal Studies at the London Royal Academy of Music. He began studying counter-tenor at 16 years old at the Baldwin Wallace Conservatory of Music. From his early studying, he had placed twice in 1st with back-to-back competitions for the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) of Ohio. In 2012, he was a scholar at the Bach Institute of Emmanuel Music in Boston, Massachusetts, where he studied and performed several J.S. Bach Cantatas. He placed a Top Prize at the Classical Singer’s Competition in New York City, won the Top Prize at the Cleveland Singer’s Club Competition, and was the first counter-tenor accepted to the Oberlin Conservatory of Music in its history. He studied there with Kendra Colton and Julien Robbins and obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in Voice Performance (2008-2012). As a Regional Finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council (2013), he later obtained his Masters in Music in Voice and Opera from the University of Michigan's School of Music, Theatre & Dance, where he studied voice and game audio (2017-2019).

Andrew Lipian has composed music for games and film, which have garnered critical acclaim and awards such as the game 10 Degrees (awarded for music by the optiMize organization), as well as for games Triple Attack, Gunrazor, and others while including many films with the Cleveland 48-hr Film Festival. He was also a recipient of the Game Audio Network Guild’s (G.A.N.G) GDC Scholarship, a board on which he now serves in an advisory capacity and chairs the G.A.N.G. Scholar Alumni Committee. His award-winning piece Face the Fight, was featured at the Game Developers Conference Demo Derby.

Beside composition, Andrew Lipian he has performed in concert venues throughout the world, taking on roles in oratorio and opera as varied as Oberon in Benjamin Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Ruggiero in George Frideric Handel’s Alcina (University Opera Theatre, March 2018) to a host of Musical Theater works (several of which Lipian directed). He also soloed with the Video Games Live orchestra, performing music from video games.

Andrew Lipian has worked as Director at Midview High School Drama Dept (November 2013-September 2015); Production and Artistic Director at Lorain Palace Theater (July 2013-November 2015); Lorain County Records Center Supervisor at Lorain County Ohio Government in Elyria, Ohio, (since January 2021). He also currently serves in the Ohio Air National Guard, where he is a veteran of Operations Inherent Resolve and Freedom Sentinel. He resides in Cleveland, Ohio with his spouse, Melinda, and their three children.
